Local guitarist Kenton Martin is California-bound

Local musician Kenton Martin is moving to California, which means a bunch of bands around East Tennessee are going to have an opening for a guitarist.

The Chattanooga native, who moved to East Tennessee in 2005 to study at the University of Tennessee, is headed west to study guitar with Carl Verheyen, a veteran of Supertramp and film and television work, he told me today.

?I emailed him and asked if I could get a lesson, so I flew out there,? he said. ?After we were done, he was like, ?Man, you sound really good, so if you wanna do it again, let me know.? We talked some more, so I?m going to go out there and be his student and hopefully start cutting into that scene a little bit.?

Awesome news for Martin; not so much for the gazillion projects of which he?s a part, including King Super and the Excellents, the David Slack Trio, Shifty and the Headmasters, the Sensational Blue Brothers and the band at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville ? not to mention his own jazz combo, the Kenton Martin Trio. He heads out at the end of the month to scope out job opportunities in the Los Angeles area and an apartment in the Reseda community, and he hopes to be settled there by September, he said.

In the meantime, barring a last-minute gig, this past weekend?s Preservation Pub show was likely his last with the most-awesome outfit King Super and the Excellents. He?ll continue to work with the band on its debut album and help the other members ? frontman Dave Bowers, bass player Sam Quinn and drummer Steve Corrigan ? find a replacement, and the guys are looking at a Johnson City show before Martin departs, but for now, the past weekend looks like it might have been it with Martin in the lineup.

Friends and fans will have plenty of time to buy the man a beer, however: Shifty and the Headmasters have an Aug. 25 date at Barley?s Taproom in Knoxville?s Old City, where the guys will cover Steely Dan?s ?Aja? in its entirety.
