Dust and water resistant Samsung Galaxy S4 could be coming soon

Galaxy S4

Could a ruggedized version of the Galaxy S4 be in the works at Samsung?

Speaking at the launch of the Galaxy S4 today in Dubai, Samsung Gulf Electronics president Young Soo Kim said that a rugged version of the phone was expected in the coming months. Specifically, he was said to say the phone would be water and dust "proof", which would make it much like the Sony Xperia Z that Alex should have thrown in the Thames reviewed last month.

This is the first we've heard mention of such a thing, and we're remaining a bit skeptical. We just wanted to pass it along for discussion, so discuss away!

New matter-antimatter difference observed in LHCb experiment at CERN

Apr. 24, 2013 ? The LHCb collaboration at CERN today submitted a paper to Physical Review Letters on the first observation of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the decays of the particle known as the B0s. It is only the fourth subatomic particle known to exhibit such behaviour.

Matter and antimatter are thought to have existed in equal amounts at the beginning of the universe, but today the universe appears to be composed essentially of matter. By studying subtle differences in the behaviour of particle and antiparticles, experiments at the LHC are seeking to cast light on this dominance of matter over antimatter.

Now the LHCb experiment has observed a preference for matter over antimatter known as CP-violation in the decay of neutral B0s particles. The results are based on the analysis of data collected by the experiment in 2011. "The discovery of the asymmetric behaviour in the B0S particle comes with a significance of more than 5 sigma -- a result that was only possible thanks to the large amount of data provided by the LHC and to the LHCb detector's particle identification capabilities," says Pierluigi Campana, spokesperson of the LHCb collaboration. "Experiments elsewhere have not been in a position to accumulate a large enough number of B0s decays."

Violation of the CP symmetry was first observed at Brookhaven Laboratory in the US in the 1960s in neutral particles called kaons. About 40 years later, experiments in Japan and the US found similar behaviour in another particle, the B0 meson. More recently, experiments at the so-called B factories and the LHCb experiment at CERN have found that the B+ meson also demonstrates CP violation.

All of these CP violation phenomena can be accounted for in the Standard Model, although some interesting discrepancies demand more detailed studies. "We also know that the total effects induced by Standard Model CP violation are too small to account for the matter-dominated Universe," says Campana. "However, by studying these CP violation effects we are looking for the missing pieces of the puzzle, which provide stringent tests of the theory and are a sensitive probe for revealing the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model."

5 Vegan Sandwich Recipes | Care2 Healthy Living

Sandwiches are such an easy on-the-go food, whether you?re packing lunch for work or school, putting together a picnic basket, or just looking for a quick meal on a busy day. Because they?re so often centered around meat and cheese, it might seem like making a satisfying vegan sandwich would be daunting, but you don?t need animal products to create a yummy sandwich recipe!

The trick to creating vegan sandwiches is just like the trick to eating vegan in general: you have to let go of some of the conventions you?re used to, and re-imagine that sandwich. Instead of starting with the meat, use fresh veggies, bean and nut spreads, tofu, or tempeh as your base, and build on that.

The other key to making a vegan sandwich just as satisfying as one made with animal products is to replace at least some the fat that you?re losing when you cut out the animal fats. Fat tastes good, and it tells our brains that we are satisfied. If you?re used to a slice of cheese on your sandwich, you?re going to feel deprived if you just take out that cheese, for example. Instead, replace the cheese with something else, like avocado, a drizzle of olive oil or some vegan mayo.

Ready to get your vegan sandwich on? Check out these yummy recipes!

Indian "24" will work like slow poison: Anil Kapoor

By Shilpa Jamkhandikar

MUMBAI (Reuters) - He's starred in several Bollywood blockbusters, an Oscar-winning film and played a Middle Eastern leader on the American TV series "24".

Anil Kapoor is now wooing Indian audiences with an adaptation of the hit thriller series about a counter-terrorism agent.

Kapoor, the remake's producer and lead actor, says he wanted to bring the "discipline and professionalism" of U.S. television to India.

The 53-year-old spoke to Reuters on the sets of his new show, describing his experience with the U.S. series and how "24" will hook Indian audiences like slow poison.

Q: When you did the original "24" in the U.S., how different was the experience?

A: When I went to the shoot, I was totally taken aback by the scale. My only experience of an international film at that time was "Slumdog Millionaire" which we shot in India. Now I was shooting in America ? It was much bigger than "Slumdog" - vanity vans and cars and the whole paraphernalia. It was huge. I went inside and saw the set. That day it was the U.N. set and I noticed the detailing. It was an exact replica. Exact. The detailing and everything was perfect.

I couldn't put the script down. We are not used to reading scripts (in India), we are used to narration. But I just had to finish reading this script. I thought this is like shooting a big commercial film. Everybody was well-prepared and completely immersed in the work culture. The way we shot it, the two camera set-up, the way it was. Slowly, I got completely sucked into it and started enjoying the whole process.

Q: Indian TV audiences are used to very different fare. Do you think you've taken a big risk?

A: Whatever I have done in my career - you like something, you go for it ? You stick your neck out and I have stuck my neck out. I am not playing it safe, I am playing the lead. And I'm a movie star.

Q: When you conceptualized the show, was (director) Abhinay Deo part of the plan?

A: The written material was already there, but I needed to get an international scale and feel. Then I happened to see "Delhi Belly". When I saw the performances, the pitch of the film, I said this is it. He is the director. When I met him, it turned out he was equally passionate about "24".

Q: What does it take to make an international-level TV show in India?

A: The first is the scale and the budget. Everything is about money today. I can't tell you about the budget but I can say that we are trying our best to have the same scale. That was the major thing, the biggest hurdle to cross. Convincing the channels that this is what it is.

Q: In that sense, it is an experiment. Isn't it?

A: It's not an experiment, it's a challenge. What happens is, even if the first season is good enough, that will be enough. Then the second season will come with a bang. Even in America, the first season was OK-OK. It was only after the second and third season, (it) took off. Television slowly gets into you like a poison ? They will realize that this will work like slow poison. It'll suck people into it.

Q: Do you have to add drama for the benefit of Indian audiences who aren't used to subtlety?

A: "Sholay" is a great example. The pitch is mainstream but real. You enjoy it. We are aiming for that kind of pitch and that's what I understand. The one thing Abhinay wants is for youngsters to watch television from "24". Somewhere, the footfalls in the theatres have increased and (TV) shows which were earlier successful aren't any more. There is a stagnancy. That's why they are going to theatres to watch these niche films. There are lesser sources of entertainment. The timing is very right.

Q: What if this doesn't work?

A: My wife says your body of work is so much, that it doesn't matter. You can move on. I am doing it when I am peaking. I am saying no to feature films. Big film-makers. Bigger stars than me have said yes to those roles. It doesn't work, it doesn't work. You move on.

Q: What would be the measure of success for you?

A: For me, it's already a success. That it's happening. I am already on seventh heaven. I have already celebrated.

Watch live: Orbital Sciences' Antares rocket to lift off on test flight (update: success!)

Watch live Orbital Sciences' Antares rocket to lift off on test flight update success!

SpaceX may be the only private outfit currently shepherding cargo to the International Space Station, but Orbital Sciences, which is the second party in NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services effort, is taking a step towards its own ISS resupply missions. Today, the firm's Antares rocket will undergo its very first test flight, taking off from the space agency's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia. Liftoff is slated for sometime between 5PM and 7PM, with an 80 percent chance of favorable weather, as opposed to the 45 percent odds and high-altitude winds that foiled its initial attempt yesterday. To watch Antares embark on its maiden voyage, hit the jump for a live video feed.

Update: Antares blasted off at a hair past 5PM and successfully separated from its mock payload. The live stream has wrapped up, but we'll slot in a video of the launch as soon as we get ahold of one.

Update 2: NASA just posted its footage of the rocket taking off, and we've placed the video after the break for your viewing pleasure.

Fundamentalism and the Chechens' fighting history

The ancestral home of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, has long been a land of fighters, but it took on the character of an Islamic jihad in the 1990s.

Already, it was home to a warrior culture, down to the very bone.

Throughout the mountain towns of the Caucasus, gymnasiums were full of wiry teens and young men learning to box, wrestle, and practice Asian martial arts. Speed bags hung from trees the way basketball hoops decorate American driveways.

Caucasians were heavily overrepresented in the combat sports on Russian, and before that Soviet, national teams.??It?s not surprising that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a boxer and the younger Dzhokhar a wrestler.

For at least two centuries, Chechens and their neighbors have been fighting to throw off the yoke of Russian domination. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, that fight heated up again.

Chechnya was pummeled brutally in the process. The main city of Grozny was largely reduced to rubble. People hand carried their water in buckets even to high-rise apartments. Few windows were left unshattered. Gas flares from ruptured pipes created huge torches on block after block. Garbage piled up on empty or pulverized lots and cows grazed through it. In the buildings where families still lived, they spray painted ?zhivoot? ? living ? on the outside walls, hoping to dissuade Russian soldiers from blowing it up.

But through all that the Chechens radiated toughness. The young men kept to the mountains, coming down to buy rifles from demoralized and poorly paid Russian soldiers ? and then to attack them with their own guns.

But by the time the Russians agreed to withdraw their troops from Chechnya in 1996, a change was visible in Chechen attitudes. The region had been Muslim for centuries, but Islam was moving more to the center of the Chechen fight. A few Arabs ? some of them veterans of the war against Soviets in Afghanistan ? came to set up madrasas to teach a fundamentalist, Wahhabi version of Islam. It made some rapid inroads, dividing mountain villages with sometimes murderous results.

When the Russians withdrew their tanks from Chechnya, long lines of them rumbling out of the mountains, men who appeared to be Arabs, with long beards, black flags with Arabic characters, and Korans held open for all to see, rode on the gun turrets.

The nationalistic flavor of the Chechen war seemed to be taking on the character of an Islamic jihad.

In the years since, Chechens have once again been suppressed by the heavy hand of Russia and in retaliation, Chechens have claimed credit for a series of horrific acts of terror against Russians ? including the massacre of schoolchildren at Beslan, the taking of an entire Moscow theater audience hostage, and a series of apartment building and subway station bombings with scores of fatalities.

From the days of Catherine the Great to the early 1990s, Russian soldiers showed a grudging respect for the great warriors of the Caucasus who fought, soldier to soldier, for their independence.

One can only imagine what the legendary Shamil ? a Caucasian hero of the 19th century ? would think of the last decade of attacks on children and other noncombatants.

Strong quake jolts China's Sichuan, killing 113

BEIJING (AP) ? A powerful earthquake struck the steep hills of China's southwestern Sichuan province on Saturday, leaving at least 113 people dead and more than 2,600 injured, nearly five years after a devastating quake wreaked widespread damage across the region.

Saturday's quake, while not as destructive as that in 2008, toppled buildings, triggered landslides and disrupted phone and power connections in mountainous Lushan county. The village of Longmen was hit particularly hard, with authorities saying nearly all the buildings had been destroyed and state television showing footage of soldiers digging through rubble.

Rescuers turned the square outside the Lushan County Hospital into a triage center, where medical personnel bandaged bleeding victims, according to footage on China Central Television. Rescuers dynamited boulders that had fallen across roads to reach Longmen and other damaged areas lying farther up the mountain valleys, state media reported.

The official Xinhua News Agency, citing the Sichuan earthquake bureau, said at least 113 people had died. The government of Ya'an city, which administers Lushan, said in a statement that more than 2,600 people were injured, 330 of them severely.

The quake ? measured by China's seismological bureau at magnitude 7.0 and the U.S. Geological Survey at 6.6 ? struck the steep hills of Lushan county shortly after 8 a.m., when many people were at home, sleeping or having breakfast. People in their underwear and wrapped in blankets ran into the streets of Ya'an and even the provincial capital of Chengdu, 115 kilometers (70 miles) east of Lushan, according to photos, video and accounts posted online.

The quake's shallow depth, less than 13 kilometers (8 miles), likely magnified the impact, and CCTV showed footage from local security cameras that were shaking. Chengdu's airport shut down for about an hour before reopening, though many flights were canceled or delayed, state media said.

Lushan, where the quake struck, lies where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually rise to the Tibetan plateau and sits atop the Longmenshan fault. It was along that fault line that the devastating magnitude-7.9 quake struck on May 12, 2008, leaving more than 90,000 people dead or missing and presumed dead in one of the worst natural disasters to strike China in recent decades.

"It was just like May 12," Liu Xi, a writer in Ya'an city, who was jolted awake by Saturday's quake, said in a message posted to his account on Sina Corporation's Twitter-like Weibo service. "All the home decorations fell at once, and the old house cracked."

Xinhua said the well-known Bifengxia panda preserve, which is near Lushan, was not affected by the quake. Dozens of pandas were moved to Bifengxia from another preserve, Wolong, after its habitat was wrecked by the 2008 quake.

As in most natural disasters, the government mobilized thousands of soldiers and others ? 7,000 people by Saturday afternoon ? sending excavators and other heavy machinery as well as tents, blankets and other emergency supplies. One soldier died after the vehicle that he and a dozen others were in slipped off the road and rolled down an embankment, state media reported.

Premier Li Keqiang flew to Ya'an to direct rescue efforts, and he and President Xi Jinping ordered officials and rescuers to make saving people the top priority, Xinhua said.

With roads blocked for several hours after the quake, the military surveyed the disaster area by air. Aerial photos released by the military and shown on state television showed individual houses in ruins in Lushan and outlying villages flattened into rubble. The roofs of some taller buildings appeared to have slipped off, exposing the floors beneath them.

A person whose posts to the micro-blogging account "Qingyi Riverside" on Weibo carried a locator geotag for Lushan said many buildings collapsed and that people could spot helicopters hovering above.

China Earth Administration said there had been at least 35 aftershocks, including at least two of magnitude 5.0 or higher.

"It's too dangerous," said a person with the Weibo account Chengduxinglin and with a Lushan geotag. "Even the aftershocks are scary."

While rescuers and state media rushed to the disaster scene, China's active social media users filled the information gap. They posted photos of people rushing to streets for safety and of buildings flattened by the quake. They shared information on the availability of phone services, apparently through data services.

NFL Top 10 Must-See Games Of 2013

By Joe Fortenbaugh, National Football Post

Let?s begin with the obvious: This is our subjective opinion of the ten best games on the 2013 NFL schedule, as it stands today, April 18. You will not agree with some or all of these suggestions and do you know what? That?s just fine with us. The comments section is open for business and each of you is more than welcome to let us know which games you think make for the most entertaining matchups of the 2013 campaign.

We tried to incorporate as many teams as possible into this list, while at the same time attempting to avoid overloading the rundown with divisional rivalries. Sure, a couple well-known hate fests pop up below, but we see Chicago play Green Bay twice every season. Matchups that occur once every few years tend to have a little more panache in our book.

For those of you who reside in Seattle, brace yourselves for Hurricane Fortenbaugh. I?m already in the process of booking my reservations for the San Francisco game and I?m looking to party.

1. Denver Broncos at New England Patriots

Date: Sunday, November 24 (Week 12)
Time: 8:30pm eastern
Channel: NBC

Why: This showdown marks the 14th time that future Hall of Fame quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will have squared off against one another in either the regular season or playoffs, with Brady holding a 9-4 career record over his chief adversary. And with Manning turning 37-years-old this past March and Brady scheduled to turn 36 in August, who knows how many more of these legendary clashes we as viewers have left. The icing on the cake is that this rivalry takes on a new dimension this season, as Brady?s top target in wideout Wes Welker has defected to the other side to join forces with Manning in 2013. Rest assured that both quarterbacks will have this date circled on their calendars.

2. San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks

Date: Sunday, September 15 (Week 2)
Time: 8:30pm eastern
Channel: NBC

Why: Two Super Bowl favorites from the same division whose head coaches have despised one another dating back to their days in the PAC-10, Seattle vs. San Francisco is the new Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore?except with more offense. Two up-and-coming quarterbacks, two nasty defenses and two of the game?s toughest running backs. Both teams defended their home turf against one another last season and both made some serious noise in the playoffs. If Wes Welker hadn?t signed with Denver, this would have been our top choice for the 2013 season. Hell, I?m already looking into flights and hotel rooms. Hey Seattle, make sure you?ve got plenty of bourbon and ice for this weekend.

3. Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles

Date: Thursday, September 19 (Week 3)
Time: 8:25pm eastern
Channel: NFL Network

Why: Andy Reid returns to Philadelphia to face the man who replaced him after 14 years and five trips to the NFC Championship game as the head coach of the Eagles. In most cities, the return of a former head coach who had as much success as Reid enjoyed in Philly would be met with polite applause. But I?m sure we can all agree that Philadelphia is not most cities.

4. New Orleans Saints at Seattle Seahawks

Date: Monday, December 2 (Week 13)
Time: 8:40pm eastern
Channel: ESPN

Why: Take one of the league?s most electrifying indoor teams and send them northwest to the most hostile outdoor facility in the entire National Football League and what do you get? The first meeting between the Saints and Seahawks since this happened:

5. Washington Redskins at New York Giants

Date: Sunday, December 29 (Week 17)
Time: 1:00pm eastern
Channel: FOX

Why: The top-two teams in the NFC East butt heads in a late-season showdown with playoff implications more than likely hanging in the balance. The two meetings between New York and Washington in 2012 resulted in a series split that was decided by a grand total of just five points. The Redskins are a team on the rise, while the Giants have a knack for bouncing back in a big way under Tom Coughlin following a disappointing season. So will it be Eli Manning taking second-year quarterback Robert Griffin III to school, or will the young pup state his case as the division?s most elite quarterback?

6. Pittsburgh Steelers at Green Bay Packers

Date: Sunday, December 22 (Week 16)
Time: 4:25pm eastern
Channel: CBS

Why: The last time these two legendary franchises got together for a slugfest, the Steelers were walking off the Cowboys Stadium turf under a blizzard of confetti while Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews were hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy. With two of the deepest, most loyal and passionate fan bases in the NFL, this game has ratings bonanza written all over it.

7. Atlanta Falcons at San Francisco 49ers

Date: Monday, December 23 (Week 16)
Time: 8:40pm eastern
Channel: ESPN

Why: A rematch of January?s NFC Championship game with one important twist: This time, it?s the Falcons who have to travel across the country. Not only will this game play an integral role in NFC playoff seeding, but this serves as a major test for an Atlanta Falcons team that is trying desperately to get over the hump and into the Super Bowl. Falcons players will try to sell all of us on the fact that this is just another football game, but we know better. After blowing a 24-14 halftime lead against the Niners back in January, the Dirty Birds will be out for a small piece of redemption in this one.

8. New England Patriots at Baltimore Ravens

Date: Sunday, December 22 (Week 16)
Time: 8:30pm eastern
Channel: NBC

Why: The 2013 AFC Championship game may have been a 28-13 rout in favor of the Ravens, but in the six games between these two organizations prior to last January?s Super Bowl qualifier, five were decided by six or fewer points. Tightly contested matchups just so happen to be a byproduct of putting New England and Baltimore on the same field at the same time.

9. Dallas Cowboys at New Orleans Saints

Date: Sunday, November 10 (Week 10)
Time: 8:30pm eastern
Channel: NBC

Why: High-octane aficionados are advised to buckle up for this clash between the Saints and Cowboys, who have combined to score a grand total of 122 points in their last two meetings against one another. Last season?s matchup that saw New Orleans emerge as a 34-31 winner featured five ties, 1,008 total yards of offense and a game-winning overtime field goal. Expect the fireworks to fly once again when two of the league?s highest-paid quarterbacks renew their rivalry in The Big Easy.

10. Chicago Bears at Philadelphia Eagles

Date: Sunday, December 22 (Week 16)
Time: 1:00pm eastern
Channel: FOX

Why: Many of you will make the case that there are at least five other games that deserve a spot on this list instead of the Chicago-Philadelphia tilt. That?s fine by us. But look at the history between these two clubs. Each of the last five meetings between the Bears and Eagles has been decided by six or fewer points. Throw brand-new offensive-minded head coaches Chip Kelly and Marc Trestman into the mix and we could have the opportunity to play witness to a whole new style of professional football.

In cyber war game, Air Force cadets fend off NSA hackers

HANOVER, Maryland (Reuters) - A U.S. Air Force Academy team on Friday beat out rivals from other elite military colleges after a three-day simulated cyber "war" against hackers from the National Security Agency that is meant to teach future officers the importance of cybersecurity.

Nearly 60 government experts ? sitting under a black skull and crossbones flag ? worked around the clock this week to break into computer networks built by students at the Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine academies. Two military graduate schools also participated.

The annual Cyber Defense Exercise (CDX), now in its 13th year, gives students real world practice in fighting off a increasing barrage of cyber attacks aimed at U.S. computer networks by China, Russia and Iran, among others.

It also allows the NSA's top cyber experts and others from military reserves, National Guard units and other agencies hone their offensive skills at a time when the Pentagon is trying to pump up its arsenal of cyber weapons.

While the students sleep or catch up on other work, some of the NSA's "red cell" attackers use viruses, so-called "Trojan horses" and other malicious software to corrupt student-built networks or steal data ? in this case, long sets of numbers dreamt up by the officials coordinating the exercise.

But the job gets tougher every year, says Raphael Mudge, an Air Force reservist who develops software and training to protect private computer networks.

"It's challenging. The students are hungry to win," said Mudge. "It forces all of us to get better."

Army General Keith Alexander, who heads both the Pentagon's Cyber Command and the NSA, stopped by to see the "red cell" hackers in action at a Lockheed Martin Corp facility near NSA headquarters on Thursday, said spokeswoman Vanee Vines.

Alexander often speaks about the need to get more young people engaged in cybersecurity given the exponential growth in the number and intensity of attacks on U.S. networks.

The Pentagon's budget for cyber operations rose sharply in the fiscal 2014 request sent to Congress, reflecting heightened concerns about an estimated $400 billion in intellectual property stolen from U.S. computer networks in recent years.

Martin Carlisle said his 28-member team fought hard for first place after a hardware failure the first day. It was their fourth win in 13 years.

"Our nation is under attack. We need to train up a new generation of leaders," he said.

Shawn Turskey, a senior NSA official, said the goal was to raise awareness among future military commanders.

"The real payoff of this program is going to be seen 10, 15 years down the road when these individuals are admirals and generals," he said.

Starting at the top, Martin had his 5D Mark III, and since he's a firm believer in backup bodies, he had his 5D Mark II as well. For lenses, he brought with him his Canon 24-70 F2.8 L, Canon 50 F1.2 L, and Canon 70-200 F2.8 L.

He also packed his RED Scarlet, a massively impressive 4K camera with an EF mount that lets him use the very same Canon lenses.

Despite all that glass, Martin's daily driver is still his iPhone 5, along with a Joby Gorilla Pod GripTight. You can see samples of that work over on Instagram, and as for the work he's doing this week...

... Stay tuned!

Mother Nature nasty foe of high school spring sports

DENVER, CO.- APRIL16: Denver South High School's ballfields and stadium covered in snow from a spring snowstorm. (Photo By Kathryn Scott Osler/The Denver Post) ( Kathryn Scott Osler )

AURORA -- All the state's spring athletes want is to go outside and play. But Mother Nature is saying no with pesky storms, record cold spells and infamous Rocky Mountain-area wind.

From opening day early last month to being within sight of May's postseason, inclement weather is taxing the high school spring season.

No one seems to recall a worse spring for prep sports. The snow hasn't been exclusive to the mountains, where legendary totals fall in areas such as Steamboat Springs. Denver and its suburbs have endured the brunt of the snow as officials estimate more than 1,000 postponements and cancellations of prep games statewide, and more are on the way with Wednesday's snowfall.

"I can't remember anything like this in 25 years," Colorado High School Activities Association assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann said.

Others can't argue.

"It's tough," ThunderRidge shortstop Brody Westmoreland said.

"Insane," said Limon baseball coach Les Layton, whose Badgers have nearly as many postponements (five) as games played (six).

"A nightmare," Highlands Ranch girls golf coach James Barker said.

In his fifth decade of coaching, Cherry Creek baseball coach Marc Johnson called it "the most challenging spring I can remember."

The state's 92nd sanctioned spring season has been in a ridiculous rut. While a fair amount of weekend competition has been completed, storms early in the weeks have backed up play like a clogged drain.

"It snows quite a bit, then you get some games in, then it snows again," Johnson said.

The weather has greatly affected six of the spring season's seven sports -- all seven when considering a few of the storms have postponed swimming and diving meets that are held indoors. But the track and field meets completed mostly were run in cold, windy weather. Ditto for girls golf and tennis. Even with girls soccer and boys and girls lacrosse having reasonable access to fields with artificial surfaces, it hasn't been a picnic.

ThunderRidge athletic director Bob Nelson said that with the series of postponements, "some programs don't want to play on grass. They want to play on turf. It makes them totally different games. Then we lose those dates. ... It's impacting more sports than normal."

As for baseball, Nelson said, "It's always a dilemma because of the dirt." It's more like mud or, frequently, frozen mud.

Northglenn baseball coach Hugo Garcia isn't alone when he says "we've been inside for more practices than outside." Dozens of teams had their first outside dates in March in the form of a game, and many are staring at five games each next week.

In addition, Denver-area nonvarsity teams have hundreds of games, meets and matches that won't be rescheduled. Covering events, including a glut of makeups, with umpires and officials has proved especially challenging. And the busiest office in any school since early March has belonged to the athletic director.

While the race is on against conflicts with prom, testing and graduation, school officials have adamantly resisted delaying the start of spring sports and scheduling games and meets into mid-June. But the weather this spring may prompt a change.

"We're all going nuts with this," Borgmann said.

Scientists reverse memory loss in animal brain cells

Thursday, April 18, 2013

Neuroscientists at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) have taken a major step in their efforts to help people with memory loss tied to brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Using sea snail nerve cells, the scientists reversed memory loss by determining when the cells were primed for learning. The scientists were able to help the cells compensate for memory loss by retraining them through the use of optimized training schedules. Findings of this proof-of-principle study appear in the April 17 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

"Although much works remains to be done, we have demonstrated the feasibility of our new strategy to help overcome memory deficits," said John "Jack" Byrne, Ph.D., the study's senior author, as well as director of the W.M. Keck Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory and chairman of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the UTHealth Medical School.

This latest study builds on Byrne's 2012 investigation that pioneered this memory enhancement strategy. The 2012 study showed a significant increase in long-term memory in healthy sea snails called Aplysia californica, an animal that has a simple nervous system, but with cells having properties similar to other more advanced species including humans.

Yili Zhang, Ph.D., the study's co-lead author and a research scientist at the UTHealth Medical School, has developed a sophisticated mathematical model that can predict when the biochemical processes in the snail's brain are primed for learning.

Her model is based on five training sessions scheduled at different time intervals ranging from 5 to 50 minutes. It can generate 10,000 different schedules and identify the schedule most attuned to optimum learning.

"The logical follow-up question was whether you could use the same strategy to overcome a deficit in memory," Byrne said. "Memory is due to a change in the strength of the connections among neurons. In many diseases associated with memory deficits, the change is blocked."

To test whether their strategy would help with memory loss, Rong-Yu Liu, Ph.D., co-lead author and senior research scientist at the UTHealth Medical School, simulated a brain disorder in a cell culture by taking sensory cells from the sea snails and blocking the activity of a gene that produces a memory protein. This resulted in a significant impairment in the strength of the neurons' connections, which is responsible for long-term memory.

To mimic training sessions, cells were administered a chemical at intervals prescribed by the mathematical model. After five training sessions, which like the earlier study were at irregular intervals, the strength of the connections returned to near normal in the impaired cells.

"This methodology may apply to humans if we can identify the same biochemical processes in humans. Our results suggest a new strategy for treatments of cognitive impairment. Mathematical models might help design therapies that optimize the combination of training protocols with traditional drug treatments," Byrne said.

He added, "Combining these two could enhance the effectiveness of the latter while compensating at least in part for any limitations or undesirable side effects of drugs. These two approaches are likely to be more effective together than separately and may have broad generalities in treating individuals with learning and memory deficits."

2013 NFL mock draft: Green Bay Packers select...

The 2013 Arrowhead Pride NFL mock draft continues. AP user nateforchiefs is representing the Green Bay Packers with the No. 26 overall pick...

The Situation

Green Bay Packers with the 26th pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

The team analysis

More holes to fill than one would think for being the 6th best team in the NFL. The OL has been underachieving, the DL Swiss cheese, WRs are decent but undermanned, ILBs are only OK, RBs are average at best and the secondary either needs to get healthy, mature or get more talent. I went over to the excellent SBN Green Bay Packers blog, Acme Packing Company, to get their hopes and analysis. The fans there are polite, educated and willing to help. Using their opinions and insight I made my pick based off of their stated team needs.

The needs

Offensive Line, Defensive Line, Wide Receiver, Running Back

To call the offensive line underachieving is probably an understatement. When you have an elite QB in Aaron Rodgers it's probably a good idea to pass protect better than giving up 51 sacks (second most in NFL in 2012). The run blocking is better but still an issue, the team averaged only 3.9 yds per carry (some of that can be assigned to the RB), but still needs help.

The defensive line was disappointing to say it best, the Packers were hoping for run stuffing help with 2012 second round pick pick Jerel Worthy but he was injured and did not play up to expectations. B.J. Raji, the Pro Bowl NT from a couple years ago regressed tremendously in 2012. Collectively they were the 23rd ranked rush defense per carry, giving up 4.5 yds per carry and 17th in total run defense yards. Outside runs seemed to be the downfall, ranking 28th and 21st in runs around the ends. The DE is supposed to stop those runs and force the RB inside to where help is (MN inspired side note, for KC Tyson Jacksons side was ranked #5 in the NFL last year).

Wide receivers are decent, but there are certainly not enough of them. Donald Driver, the ageless wonder himself, has decided to retire. Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb are really all that's there, and none of them are a #1 WR in my opinion. When you are a high powered passing attack you can never have to many pass catchers (My fantasy football team inspired side note: yes Finley, you are supposed to CATCH the passes).

When you're running backs are James Starks, Ryan Grant and Jon Kuhn (KUHN!!!) you might need more help here. A speed guy would go nice as well because none of these guys are burners so to speak.

The Pick

With the 26th Pick in the NFL draft the Green Bay Packers select....

Johnathan Hankins, DL from Ohio State

Uspw_6758272_medium
Mary Langenfeld-USA TODAY Sports

Johnathan Hankins is a big son of a gun, listed at 322 at Ohio State (I think that's a lie, he looked about a biscuit away from 350). He is a physically powerful player, controlling multiple linemen by himself, allowing others to make the plays and get the stats. He's lined up primarily inside in the 4-3 defense, but would at times line up outside as well. The Buckeye coaches think highly of him, both as a player and as a person, he has in fact been compared to our own Dontari Poe in size and physicality. Quicker than he looks, he has a good first step and can chase after the ball carrier and QB, but he is definitely a run stuffer first.

Like most college defensive linemen he has some things he needs to work on: His stamina needs improvement, his weight needs controlled (see biscuit analogy above), his snaps will need to be monitored as he is much better earlier in games, (he rarely left the field, but would get noticeably worn down as games went along), his technique needs improvement as he relied heavily on just being stronger and bigger than most of the offensive guys he went against. There will be a learning curve with him and will probably be brought along slowly. He will be able to play any position on the DL with the Packers 3-4 defense, he will be probably depth initially and a starter by year 2. An interesting thing of note here, the Packers have only 3 DL on contract for 2014, so especially look for them to plan for the future with this pick.

Family, Parenting, Reviews, and Giveaways - The Attic Girl: THE ...

Disclosure: I received a copy of THE BIBLE Series on Blu-ray for review purposes. No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own. For more info. see my Disclosure Policy.? Roma Downey, Mark Burnett, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, HISTORY Channel, Christian movies

From Executive Producers Mark Burnett (The Voice, THE BIBLE ? an epic 10-hour miniseries debuting on History? March 3, and coming to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD April 2 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Survivor) and Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel) comes THE BIBLE ? an epic 10-hour miniseries debuting on History? March 3, and coming to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD April 2 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Featuring hours of never before seen behind-the-scenes footage and making-of featurettes in a stunning high bit rate HD transfer and immersive 5.1 audio, THE BIBLE is the must-own Blu-ray and DVD event of the year. The Blu-ray and DVD exclusively feature an all-new cut of the miniseries featuring more of the stories you know in ways you?ve never seen.

The four-disc Blu-ray and DVD set dives deeper into the making of the series and features a behind-the-scenes look at how the groundbreaking docudrama came together. Interviews with producers, directors, and cast illustrate creative collaboration on-set and off and show how the remarkable Moroccan scenery was transformed into the world of the Bible.??

When they describe THE BIBLE miniseries as epic, it is definitely worthy of that title.? It's a monumental task to bring viewers through the vast history of the Bible from creation to Christ!? There are many movies that have tried to bring the Bible to life, but this mini-series is definitely on a grand scale.???

During its run on tv, THE BIBLE propelled HISTORY channel to #1 in all of television from 8-10PM Sunday nights with 95 million cumulative viewers.? Amazing!

It is a bit odd to hear a Scottish brogue on Noah and to hear other actors with European accents play Middle Eastern people.? But, if you look past some of the more awkward moments and look at the content, it is very captivating.??

I was especially moved by the New Testament episodes.? The actor who plays Jesus feels genuine; his soft spoken words and gentle mannerisms are just what you might imagine Jesus to be.?? From his birth, the crowds following him, the disciples spending time with him to the cross scene, you feel as if you are on a journey along with Jesus.

?My teenage son was skeptical when he saw that it was a History Channel series; he thought that it would be a boring documentary.? We weren't able to watch all the episodes on tv when they aired. But we've been watching many of the episodes together over the past week and it's really captured his attention.?
?
THE BIBLE will definitely open up dialogue and engage people in conversation.? I think it's a great tool to familiarize people with the Bible and get them thinking:? Did these events actually happen the way it was portrayed?? What does the Bible actually say??? What do I believe?? It certainly has sparked some good conversations with my teenager.

?

There are some very intense and often violent scenes throughout the series.? I don't want to give anything away for those who haven't watched, but it is definitely not for younger children.?? There were even moments that I as an adult was a bit taken aback.? I recommend ages? 13-14+ for those reasons. ??
