An Orlando treasure | College Park Community Paper

City Commissioner Robert Stuart

City Commissioner
Robert Stuart

As Spring rolls around, we get a chance to enjoy wonderful weather and many great outdoor amenities in Orlando.? There are community events?College Park?s own Sunday in the Park is March 10th.? But in keeping with February?s topic of highlighting a city amenity, I wanted to focus this month on Beautiful Leu Gardens.

Leu Gardens is the historical home of Mr. Harry P. Leu and his wife, Mary Jane, which was generously donated to the City in 1961.? It?s an amazing 50-acre botanical oasis, minutes from downtown, designed to inspire visitors to appreciate and understand plants.? Leu Gardens also boasts the Leu House Museum, which reveals turn-of-the-century living for the families who once called this property home.

The history of the house and gardens began long before the City?s involvement- in 1885, John Thomas Mizell built a farmhouse on the site (his family plots are still located on the property). In 1902, Duncan Pell bought surrounding land that today accounts for the majority of the garden?s acreage.? Joseph Woodward was the next owner and made more improvements to the home.?Then, after a period as a rental home, the Leu family purchased the home and gardens in 1936.

Harry Leu was a native Floridian, born in Orlando.? His parents moved to Orlando from Maitland on the day Mr. Leu was born!? He was a very good businessman, whose work ethic was engrained at a young age.? The story is that ?Can Do Leu?, at the age of 10, bought hand-held fans for 5 cents and turned around and sold them at a family funeral for 10 cents. After graduation, he took a job setting up machinery at Cain O?Berry Boiler Company.? Not satisfied, he set off for New York to take a business course and returned home at the request of his mother. He again worked at the boiler company and, after positions as a bookkeeper and clerk, eventually purchased enough stock to have controlling interest in the company.? He changed the focus of the company to industrial supplies and Harry P. Leu Inc was off and running.

He then met and married Mary Jane and together they purchased the home for $40,000.? They spent time remodeling and focused on their joint love of gardening.? They traveled the world to find unique specimens and grew plants that should have been impossible to cultivate in Florida?s extreme climate.? By 1950, the Leu?s had started to allow public viewing of the gardens.

In 1950, Harry sold his business and devoted his time to philanthropy and his gardens.? When he and Mary Jane donated their property to the City, they put in specific clauses to ensure that the property remain a garden, open to the public, and that none of the acreage would be sold or used for any other purpose.

Please come and enjoy this legacy that was left to all of the residents of Orlando. March is a great time to enjoy the

gardens.? March 16th and 17th is their Annual Spring Plant Sale.? Admission is free and open to the public from 9:00a to 5:00p each day.? This is a great way to enjoy this amenity, support local vendors and beautify your own property at the same time. For more information, go to leugardens.org.

Their website also boasts information about many other great events that occur on a monthly and annual basis, such as their monthly children?s storytime, movie date nights and their annual jazz and blues stroll in April.

Thanks for your continued support and I hope you get some free time to enjoy a stroll around Leu Gardens this month!

7 Tips for Taxpayers Who Owe Money to the IRS

There?s a pit that you get in your stomach when you know that you?re going to owe the IRS at the end of the year.

Owing any kind of debt is always stressful, but debt to the IRS is particularly worrisome. Perhaps this is because there?s no statute of limitations on the amount of time the debt will follow you around.

Here?s some friendly advice for people who know they?re going to owe on April 15.

Don?t Panic

This is the big one. Don?t panic. Despite their reputation to the contrary, the IRS customer service representatives are some of the friendliest people you?re ever going to owe money to.

You aren?t the first person to be in the hole to the IRS and you won?t be the last, so relax. The IRS only aggressively pursues people who are actively avoiding paying them back.

Unless you?re one of those people, you have nothing to worry about.

File on Time

If you fail to file on time, you?re just going to end up owing more in penalties, fees and interest than you would otherwise.

It?s a bit like going to the doctor when you?re sick: The visit to the doctor isn?t what makes you ill and filing your taxes isn?t what creates the debt. File on time to avoid making your debt load to the IRS even larger.

Pay What You Can

You might not be able to pay everything right now, but you should pay what you can when you file.

Not only is this a good faith gesture to the IRS, it will begin the process of moving your debt load down.

Trying to Make a Deal

Making a deal with the IRS isn?t the easiest thing in the world, but it is possible. You begin the process of making a deal by filing a Form 656, Offer in Compromise.

This is for people who will have a serious economic hardship paying their back taxes to the IRS.

While you might not think you fall under that category, there?s no harm in trying ? it certainly isn?t going to increase your debt load, nor will the process trigger an audit.

Keep Your Installment Payments

It?s important to pay your installment payments on time. To not do so is to violate your agreement with the IRS.

If you default on your payments, they can come after you for the full amount and increase the penalties and interest on the amount that you owe.

If you find that you can?t make the installment payments as agreed, call the IRS. There are a number of options they can offer, such as a reduced installment payment or a compromise offer.

To simply stop making payments without communication is one of the worst things you can do.

Talk to an Advocate

You don?t need to hire an expensive lawyer to help you resolve your problems with the IRS.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization that exists to help taxpayers looking for proactive solutions to their repayment problems.

You can contact the TAS through a toll-free number. They?ll take a look at your case and advise you as to whether or not they can be of assistance.

Hire a Lawyer

When you?ve done all you can and you?re still unable to pay off your debts to the IRS, it?s time to consider professional help. This is generally for people who have very large amounts of debt and need to do something to lower the amount.

A tax lawyer or CPA has more experience going up against the IRS in his little finger than you do in your whole body. It might cost a bit of change up front, but when you?ve tried everything else, this is your only option.

But Remember ? Don?t Panic

We?ve discussed the most common ways that IRS debt gets resolved, as well as the absolute worst. Chances are good that yours is going to be closer to common and benign, than nightmarish and Byzantine.

Remember what we said at the beginning: IRS customer service agents are very helpful and generally willing to work with people making a good faith effort to repay their debts.

MLS MatchDay updated for 2013 with new interface, tablet support

MLS MatchDay

The 2013 MLS season kicks off in just three days, and the MLS MatchDay app has been updated right on time with a new interface and full tablet support. Last year's update was functional but certainly not easy to use or perfectly designed. For 2013, they've pulled out all the stops and gone with a complete redesign that should keep Android users happy for the whole season. The interface has taken on a holo design, shedding the legacy menu button and adding a slide-in panel to improve navigation. There are also now more granular notification settings, so you can see when lineups are available, to get condensed match stats, and breaking news alerts.

The new update also added tablet support, which takes advantage of the larger screen to display news articles in a newspaper-style format rather than a list, and offer more navigation options on individual team and match pages. Over and above the new interface, you can now watch matches directly on your devices with MLS Live, as well as see Goal of the Week videos.

Stick around after the break and see the new phone UI, along with a few comparisons to what the new app does on a 7-inch tablet. Then head to the Play Store link at the top of this post to get the app.

Russia wants U.S. to urge Syria rebels into peace talks

MOSCOW/ BERLIN (Reuters) - Russia called on the United States on Tuesday to press the Syrian opposition to hold direct talks with Damascus, saying President Bashar al-Assad's opponents must appoint negotiators.

The crisis in Syria made up "the bulk of the conversation" between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at talks in Berlin on Tuesday, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

After talks she characterized as "really serious and hard-working", Moscow and Washington sounded a rare note of accord over efforts to launch talks to end the nearly two-year-old conflict, in which 70,000 people have been killed.

Lavrov said the new U.S. top diplomat seemed to grasp the gravity of the crisis in Syria and that the former Cold War foes had agreed to do everything in their power "to create the best conditions to facilitate the soonest possible start of a dialogue between the government and the opposition."

He said Russia wanted to see the Syrian opposition name its representatives for talks with the government at a meeting in Rome this week between the Syrian opposition, and Western and regional powers favorable to their cause.

Moscow and Washington have been at loggerheads over whether the Syrian opposition's calls for Assad to step down should be a pre-condition for talks.

Lavrov, ahead of the meeting with Kerry, said he would urge Washington to lean on the Syrian opposition to drop requests for Assad to go, a demand he characterized as "unrealistic".

Russia has been one of Assad's staunchest ally and, with China, has blocked three U.N. Security Council resolutions aimed at mounting pressure on him to end the violence that began with a crackdown on street protests against his rule.

Washington has sided with the Syrian opposition in seeking Assad's removal from power.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said in Moscow on Monday that the government was ready for talks, but opposition leaders and rebel commanders insist Assad must go first.

Kerry responded dismissively to Moualem's offer, saying it was hard to understand how people having Scud missiles fired at them would take an offer of dialogue seriously. Syria denies using ballistic missiles in the fighting.

He also appeared to promise more concrete support to Assad's opponents, without saying whether the United States might rethink its earlier aversion to arming or training them.

"We are determined that the Syrian opposition is not going to be dangling in the wind," Kerry said in London on Monday.

Lavrov also signaled on Tuesday that the prospects for direct talks in Syria had receded in the past few days, voicing fears "extremists" now have the upper hand among Assad's foes.

"A few days ago it seemed that conditions for the sides to sit down for talks ... were getting clearer," he said.

"But then came denials of such an approach. It seems extremists, who bet on a military solution to Syria's problems and block initiatives to start dialogue, have for now come to dominate in the ranks of the Syrian opposition, including in the so-called (Syrian) National Coalition."

Western countries and some Arab states have accused Russia, a long-standing arms supplier to Damascus, of shielding Assad.

Moscow has hit back by saying it has worked hard to try to persuade the two sides in Syria to start talks and accusing its Western allies of failing to do enough to support those efforts.

It also says support for the rebels plays into the hands of militant Islamists, a theme Assad himself often evokes.

Misha Collins promoted to 'Supernatural' regular

The CW

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Well, this is "Supernatural" news to set our hearts aflutter. Misha Collins, who plays anguished angel Castiel on the CW drama, will return as a series regular for season nine.

"I don't think the feathers to the offices campaign was what saved the angel, but it does look like i'm going to be a regular for season 9," the amusing actor tweeted Monday.

Castiel has been a fan favorite ever since his introduction in season four. His death in season eight sparked outrage among supporters of the socially awkward angel, who was resurrected -- along with his rocking trenchcoat -- this season.

Like co-star Jensen Ackles, Collins will stretch his wings behind the camera: He's also set to direct an episode in the ninth season of the cult hit, which was officially renewed Feb. 11.

"Supernatural" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.

(AP) ? In a season of startling change for the Catholic Church, the latest break with tradition was as unexpected as it was a wakeup call to the 115 men who will elect the next pope.

Britain's highest-ranking Catholic leader resigned and removed himself Monday from the upcoming conclave, saying he did not want allegations that he engaged in improper conduct with priests to be a distraction during the solemn process of choosing the next leader of the church's 1.2 billion-member flock.

It was the first time a cardinal has recused himself from a conclave because of personal scandal, according to Vatican historians.

The Vatican insisted that Pope Benedict XVI accepted Cardinal Keith O'Brien's resignation purely because O'Brien was nearing the retirement age of 75 ? not because of the accusations.

But O'Brien himself issued a statement Monday saying he would skip the conclave because he wanted to avoid becoming the focus of media attention at such a delicate time.

"I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me ? but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor," said O'Brien, who had been archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh. "However, I will pray with them and for them that, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they will make the correct choice for the future good of the church."

Through his spokesman, O'Brien has contested allegations made Sunday in a British newspaper that three priests and a former priest had filed complaints to the Vatican alleging that the cardinal acted inappropriately with them.

There were no details about the behavior, and the Observer newspaper did not name the priests. It said the allegations date back to the 1980s.

The cardinal's action comes in the wake of a grassroots campaign to shame another cardinal, retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, into refraining from participating because of his role protecting sexually abusive priests.

Mahony, however, has defiantly said he would participate in the voting for the new pope.

The difference boils down to the fact that O'Brien himself was accused of improper behavior, whereas Mahony was shown to have covered up for other priests who raped and molested children. That distinction has long shielded bishops from Vatican sanction.

Several other cardinals who will elect the next pope have been accused ? and some have admitted ? to failing to protect children from abusive priests. If all of them were to recuse themselves for negligence, the College of Cardinals would shrink by quite a few members.

Terrence McKiernan of BishopAccountability.org, an online database of records on clergy abuse cases, urged other whistleblowers to come forward if they have information about other compromised cardinal electors.

"It is a public demonstration of the role that clerics with inside information can have in bringing accountability to a church where secrecy has led to a crisis of sexual misconduct," he said. "Cardinals who are tainted by the crisis cannot choose the person who will solve it."

With O'Brien's recusal and the decision of a frail Indonesian cardinal to stay home, there are expected to be 115 cardinals under age 80 who are eligible to vote in the conclave.

Separately Monday, Benedict changed the rules of the conclave, allowing cardinals to move up the start date if all of them arrive in Rome before the usual 15-day waiting period between the end of one pontificate and the start of the conclave. It was one of his last acts as pope before stepping down Thursday.

The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24, and Easter Sunday is March 31. In order to have a new pope in place for the church's most solemn liturgical period, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17, a tight timeframe if a conclave were to start on March 15, as previous rules would have required.

Also Monday, Benedict decided that the contents of a secret investigation into the 2012 leaks of Vatican documents won't be shared with the cardinals ahead of the conclave. Benedict met Monday with the three elderly cardinals who conducted the probe and decided that "the acts of the investigation, known only to himself, remain solely at the disposition of the new pope," a Vatican statement said.

Speculation has been rife in the Italian media that the three cardinals ? Julian Herranz, Jozef Tomko and Salvatore De Giorgi ? would be authorized to share the information with fellow cardinals before the conclave. That assumed the cardinal electors would want to know details about the state of dysfunction in the Vatican bureaucracy and on any potentially compromised colleagues before possibly voting one into office.

Benedict appointed the three men last year to investigate the origins of leaks, which revealed petty wrangling, corruption, cronyism and even allegations that senior Vatican officials conspired to out a prominent Catholic newspaper editor as gay.

The pope's butler was convicted of aggravated theft in October for having stolen the papers and given them to a journalist who then published them in a blockbuster book.

The three cardinals cannot share the full contents of their investigation, but it's unclear if they could give subtle hints about potential papal candidates to the electors. The Vatican's assertion that only the pope knew the contents of the dossier was a clear message to readers of Italian newspapers, which have run several articles purporting to know the contents of the report.

O'Brien's decision to remain home rather than participate in the conclave made his the first head to roll in the remarkable two weeks since Benedict, 85, stunned the world and announced he was becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign.

Monday's announcement marked a dramatic end to a career that got off to a rocky start when in 2003, as a condition of being made a cardinal, O'Brien was forced to issue a public pledge to defend church teaching on homosexuality, celibacy and contraception. He was pressured to make the pledge after he had called for a "full and open discussion" on such matters.

At the time, O'Brien said he had been misunderstood and wanted to clarify his position. But it's clear now he never really changed his mind. On Friday, three days before his resignation was made public, O'Brien told the BBC that celibacy should be reconsidered since it's not based on doctrine but rather church tradition and "is not of divine origin."

It appeared to be something of a parting shot, reasserting beliefs that he had kept quiet for a decade.

At home, at O'Brien's St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Edinburgh, his decision was met with shock and disbelief.

"There are a lot of unanswered questions here, and I am unhappy about that. People can make such serious charges while remaining anonymous," said David Murphy, an administrator from Edinburgh. "It's like he's been hounded out of office without a proper chance to defend himself."

But Peter Mitchell, a churchgoer from Fife, conceded that the church may have to brace itself for scandal. "These don't appear to be random allegations. We are talking about three serving priests who are being very specific, and I don't think they would lie in this way."

O'Brien said in a statement that he was in "indifferent health" and had offered his resignation last November ? a statement confirmed by the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

Lombardi said the pope had merely acted on the resignation now as he clears up final tasks before stepping down. Usually the pope waits until after a cardinal's 75th birthday to accept a resignation. In this case, Benedict acted a few weeks early.

Get to see Google Glass at Comex

Muscat: Adding a twist to the concept of wearing technology as an accessory, ever since the Google Glass Project was announced in 2012, the world awaits with bated breath to see the world through Google Glass. Comex 2013 taking place from March 25th -29th at the Oman International Exhibition Centre will take consumers through the technology that becomes public by 2014.

According to Google co-founder Sergey Brin who was spotted promoting the prototype of Google Glass on the NYC Subway, the idea of Google Glass is to make users, "less a slave to your device. It's freedom, it's about doing brand-new, risky technological things ? making science fiction real"

Google Glass will be the first-ever headset to project images and data directly onto the wearers eyes. When you put on the glasses, you can see display applications for date, time, temperature, music and texting. To activate your apps you look up, and the eye-tracking software will detect the application you want to select.

You can also use vocal cues to select applications, open notifications, set reminders and ask Glass if your best friend is in the area. You can use the side of the headset to scroll and control apps. You can take photographs and videos without using your hands by merely looking at your surroundings and saying "Take a picture of this".

You can even record yourself on the spot with the message right in front of your eyes. If you're at the train station and you see the schedule is full you can use Google Glass to seek an alternate route and arrows on the glasses will guide you to your destination. You can even use the device for chatting or video chatting purposes.

Advertising and marketing
Instead of using an ear-piece or speaker setup, Google will use a technology that lets you hear what Glass is telling you without compromising your ability to pay attention to other sounds as well. This means automobile drivers and pedestrians can safely travel wearing these glasses.

Google Glass will change the face of advertising and marketing for businesses since they will have the opportunity to personalise ads and track their consumer's interests using the Glass.

The future seems clearer with Google Glass and while its true potential is yet to be discovered, we will for the time being rely on present electronic gadgets and their appealing features.

Comex 2013, Oman's leading IT and Telecom show will focus on the latest consumer gadgets and business and government related solutions under the Comex Shopper, Comex Business and eGovernment pavilions. The event is organised by OITE Trade Fairs under the patronage of e.oman.

Snowshoeing - Shawn Wenger, Ethan Wenger 17Lea McLaneEven without the adrenaline factor that popularizes many winter sports, snowshoeing is becoming more accessible and more appealing in Western Canada, if not the world.

We know that snowshoes were developed centuries ago and used around the world, but there?s little certainty about their exact origin. Whatever their genesis, there?s no doubt they were used to provide an efficient means of travelling on snow. Their use has become more recreational over time, with some of the first documented snowshoeing clubs surfacing in Eastern Canada in the 1800s. Today, snowshoeing is a relatively new popular sport and is not yet represented at the Olympics.

One company that can place a claim in helping raise the profile of snowshoeing is Dirty Feet, which runs snowshoe races, along with trail runs and mountain bike races, in B.C.?s Interior.

?Snowshoeing?s been the fastest growing sport in North America for the past 10 years. You?d be amazed at the amount of people going out snowshoeing, it?s huge,? says Grace Hiom, who runs Dirty Feet with her husband Phil, adding that Dirty Feet has seen large increases in registrations since it launched.

The early incarnations of snowshoes were tough wooden frames with webbing made of animal hide, like caribou or deer, between the frame and leather buckles to secure the foot. Hiom said that nowadays they?re much more versatile.

?There?s really a snowshoe for every use. There are running specific snowshoes, recreational type snowshoes and more aggressive stepper snowshoes to give you more traction and a harness system for doing longer steeper stuff,? she explains.

Hiom added that as long as you set them up right the beauty of snowshoeing is that it?s easy.

?You rent some snowshoes and . . . just hike wherever you?d usually hike in the summertime, it makes it easy to just go do it, you don?t have to organize a big group, don?t usually have to pay trail fees (unless in resorts or parks).?

Dirty Feet will bring the North Face Dirty Feet Snowshoe Fun Run and Walk to Sun Peaks for its fourth year on March 3, and Hiom encourages all people to enter.

?The course (at Sun Peaks) isn?t too crazy technical, it?s a fun 5 kilometre loop and the 10 km is two loops of the 5 km. It?s on the snowshoe trails (and) crosses the Nordic trails,? says Hiom.

The event is open to all ages and will be followed by snacks and hot drinks. There will also be a prize presentation that?s not just for the place getters.

?We have a lot of prizes for our races because we like to encourage people to just come out and participate. You can be dead last and win a $200 prize.?

Cost of entry is $30 until February 23, and will increase to $35 on February 24. Registration closes on March 1, and there is no race day registration.

LG brings together entire four-tier smartphone lineup at MWC

LG at MWC

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

LG is taking some time at MWC 2013 to lay out its entire portfolio of phones for 2013, which it calls its "four-tier strategy". LG is hoping to cover an entire range of specs, sizes and price points with four lines -- Optimus G Series, Vu: Series, F Series and LII (L2) Series. We've already seen what LG has in store for the G Series, which is the highest end specs possible -- think Optimus G, Optimus G Pro. The Optimus Vu hasn't exactly been the hit LG was hoping for, but they're sticking with it going forward, focusing on pen input and multi-window apps as part of its QSlide software.

The newest additions to the lineup are the F Series and LII Series, filling out the middle and low-end, respectively. We received some details on the first F Series devices -- the F5 and F7 -- which have solid specs and are meant to expand LG's LTE offerings. The LII Series is focused on design rather than raw specs, with 3G-only devices that seem to be a playground for LG to try out new design elements in the low end.

LG is clearly trying to focus its design and product portfolio around the Optimus name in new ways for 2013, falling in line with the likes of Samsung and HTC that are focusing on a single flagship brand name. We'll see if this can help LG push its portfolio ahead in the coming year.

The flu hit American workers hard in January

In a new study out Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control, the vaccine proved effective just over half of the time. And among seniors who are 65 years old and older, one of the most vulnerable populations, the vaccine only offered nine percent protection. NBC's Robert Bazell reports.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

That nasty flu season appears to have taken a toll on our productivity as well as our health.

More American workers called in sick in January than during any month in nearly five years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said this week.

Nearly 2.9 million full-time workers only worked part-time during the week in which they were surveyed because of illness, injury or medical appointment, the BLS said. Also,?more than 1.2 million people were off work for the whole week they were surveyed because they were sick, the BLS said.

That?s the highest level of people calling in sick since February?2008, when 1.3 million people missed a full week of work and 3.3 million full-time workers only worked part-time because of illness.

The BLS noted that more people typically call in sick during the winter months, when seasonal illnesses such as cold and the flu are common. But this year appears to have been especially hard on Americans, and on workers.

The flu season got off to an early and aggressive start, but the good news is that it appears to have peaked in late January, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Still, experts warn that the flu could continue to circulate for months.

In addition, other bugs, such as common colds and the stomach flu, can keep workers from heading into the office.

For many workers, getting sick can literally be costly. There is no federal requirement that companies provide paid sick leave, although companies who are subject to the Family and Medical Leave Act requires unpaid sick leave.

About 66 percent of workers have access to paid sick leave, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Full-time workers are much more likely than part-time workers to have paid sick leave, according to the BLS.

Have you had to call in sick yet this season?

The Chromebook Pixel might be the new Linux ultrabook you're waiting for

Linux on the Pixel

After the announcement of the Chromebook Pixel yesterday, a lot of people were in love with the hardware, but thought the price tag was a bit high for a machine running Chrome OS. I'm in that camp as well. I think the hardware is mostly worth the price tag (a 256GB SSD would affirm that in a big way), but can't justify the price for a machine running Chrome OS the way things are now.

We're pretty sure the Pixel is a portent of big things to come for Chrome OS, but just in case, here's a full blown version of Linux Mint running on the sexy thing. Bill Richardson, Chrome OS software engineer at Google, shows it off and gives fairly easy to understand instructions to do it yourself in his Google+ feed.

With devices shipping out today, things might get pretty interesting next week if you've been looking for a high-end Linux ultrabook.

Fixmo SafeWatch will keep your personal data safe, and you're invited to try out the free beta

Fixmo SafeWatch

Fixmo is a name we usually associate with enterprise mobile risk management solutions or government agency IT (they also make some great BlackBerry apps), but that also have a pretty comprehensive Android application in the works. Their upcoming SmartWatch app is designed to help folks like you and me to protect our device, our personal data, and our privacy.

It's more than just an Android malware scanner. If that's all they had to offer, we would just lump them in with the rest and move on. The malware scanner is included, but when coupled with things like call and SMS filtering and remote lock, locate, and wipe, SafeWatch is certainly worth a look. Check out the features.

  • Anti-virus scanning
  • Unsecure Wifi network alerts
  • Backup/restore of your personal contacts and photos
  • SMS/Call filtering
  • Locate, lock or wipe a lost or stolen device
  • Flag certain contacts in your address book as "private", hiding the phone logs and SMS messages to and from them
  • Make a device "scream" through a simple web-based console
  • Trigger device camera to send back a photo of what it can see through a simple web-based console
  • "Anti-loss triggers" that can detect certain behaviors that may suggest your device is lost or stolen, and automatically lock your phone and send you an alert so you can react before something bad happens.

It sounds like something many of us could use, from a company that big business and the government has trusted for years. The app is coming to Google Play soon for a monthly subscription fee, but Fixmo is offering Android Central readers a chance to join an exclusive beta program and try the app themselves today. Folks who get in on the beta also get a year of free service. Hit the link below and sign up to try. They are only accepting 500 users into the beta, so get in quickly if you're interested.

European Association for the Study of the Liver

Brussels and Geneva, 20th February 2013 --- Major progress has been made in the past 30 years in the knowledge and management of liver disease, yet approximately 29 million Europeans still suffer from a chronic liver condition.

The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) today unveiled its new publication The burden of liver disease in Europe: a review of available epidemiological data. Key findings in the report suggest that alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis B and C and metabolic syndromes related to overweight and obesity are the leading causes of cirrhosis and primary liver cancer in Europe. The report is the result of a review of 260 epidemiological studies published in the last five years in order to survey the current state of evidence on the burden of liver disease in Europe and its causes. Speaking immediately before a launch event, hosted by Mr Stephen Hughes MEP, at the European Parliament, Prof. Mark Thursz, EASL Secretary-General, noted that "although the incidence and prevalence of liver disease in Europe is alarming, what is encouraging to see is that each of the major causes of liver disease is potentially amenable to prevention and treatment. This means we all have an opportunity to make a difference, through implementing the right policy changes. The report shows us the importance of tackling the excessive consumption of alcohol which is the leading cause of cirrhosis and primary liver cancer. The Scottish Minimum Unit Pricing of alcohol is an example of the urgent measures needed and we continue to draw attention to the importance of its implementation".

Stephen Hughes, MEP, host of the launch event at the European Parliament in Brussels, welcomed the publication of the report and took the opportunity to announce that he and a group of like-minded MEPs with an interest in Liver Disease had recently decided to create the "Friends of the Liver MEP Group". Mr Hughes, who is chair of the group, said "we hope that by creating this informal group this will enable us to raise awareness within the European Parliament of the seriousness of the liver disease epidemic and will encourage every single one of those 29 million Europeans who suffer from a chronic liver condition. They have not been forgotten. They will not be forgotten".

Prof. Markus Peck, EASL Vice-Secretary and Prof. Patrizia Burra, EASL EU Policy Councillor, both of whom were speakers at the launch event, welcomed the report's publication and Mr Hughes' announcement and said that "EASL looks forward to working with Members of the European Parliament as we take the report findings and use them to draw attention to the importance of tackling the major risk factors for liver disease and also to ensure that enough is done in order that cost-effective prevention programmes can be implemented and novel treatments to tackle liver disease and avoidable deaths in Europe are developed".

The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL)

EASL is the leading liver association in Europe. EASL attracts the foremost hepatology experts as members and has an impressive track record in promoting research in liver disease, supporting wider education, and promoting changes in European liver policy.

EASL believes the EU has a key role to play in raising awareness of liver disease in Europe, increasing additional funding for research, setting standards and guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care of liver disease across the EU and encouraging member states to make liver disease a public health and research priority.

About Liver Disease

Liver disease, estimated to affect 6% of the EU population (approx. 29 million people), is reported to be the EU's 5th biggest killer, accounting for at least one in six deaths. In 2004, the mortality rate for chronic liver diseases was estimated at 14.3 per 100,000 in the EU-25. This means that more than 70,000 Europeans are dying from chronic liver disease every year. Even more worrying is the fact that the EU statistics do not cover all diseases of the liver in one category, e.g. alcohol abuse related deaths and liver cancer are treated separately. Therefore, the actual rate of deaths from liver disease is certainly much higher than the statistics suggest.
