Wind Zone Construction - DIY Home Improvement, Remodeling ...

We bought our house in Oct 2010. It was built in 2000. It is a concrete slab, wood frame, and Hardieplank exterior. We had to have a windstorm waiver for insurance because there is not a windstorm certificate on file for the house. The roof was replaced in the summer of 2010 due to damage from Hurricane Ike, so there is a windstorm certificate on the roof. This home was a foreclosure, so we have no history on it. I believe we are in Wind Zone 2. The house is just outside Alvin, Tx.
A couple of weekends ago I started to remove the ceramic tile in a couple of rooms to install laminate floors. During the process of removing the baseboards I found some mold on one wall, and ants in the two exterior walls. I have remediated the issues, and currently have all of the sheet rock removed except for the ceiling. All of the walls have metal straps at the tops and bottoms, and makes me think that it was built with windstorm requirements in mind. I'm curious if anyone here knows anything about windstorm building requirements. I will try to post a picture or two to see if anyone can tell me if this looks like it was built to windstorm specs.
I'm not looking for a definitive answer, just some opinions. I'm going to see if I can get one of the state recognized structural engineers (Texas) to come look at it before I start putting things back together, and see what needs to be done to get windstorm certification.

Egypt court sentences 21 to death for stadium disaster

updated 6:03 a.m. ET Jan. 26, 2013

CAIRO, Jan 26 - An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced to death 21 people found guilty of involvement in the Port Said soccer stadium disaster in which 74 people died last year.

The ruling could help reduce prospects of fresh clashes on Egypt's turbulent streets. Soccer fans and families of those killed had threatened more violence if the punishments did not satisfy them, and many had demanded the accused be executed.

The ruling followed nine deaths during protests nationwide on Friday and early on Saturday, held to mark two years since Egypt's revolution forced strongman Hosni Mubarak from power and to accuse President Mohamed Mursi and his Islamist allies of reimposing authoritarian rule.

The judge, Sobhy Abdel Maguid, read out a list of 21 names "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote a death verdict as all such sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

Seventy-three people have been charged with involvement in the Feb. 1, 2012 disaster at the end of a match between Cairo's Al Ahly and al-Masry, the local side.

Spectators were crushed when panicked crowds tried to escape from the stadium after a post-match pitch invasion by supporters of al-Masry. Others fell or were thrown from terraces, witnesses said.

Many of those who died were supporters of Al Ahly.

The verdicts for others accused will be announced on March 9, said the judge, who had called for calm in the court before and during the reading of the ruling.

In response to the sentences, supporters gathered at Al Ahly club in Cairo cheered. In the courtroom on the outskirts of Cairo, familes of victims clapped and some wept with emotion.

"God is greatest" one shouted, while others held up pictures of the victims.

People gathered near the Port Said prison where most of the suspects were held. State television reported the sound of gunshots and said police fired tear gas in the area. (Reporting by Yasmine Saleh and Omar Fahmy; Writing by Edmund Blair; Editing by Andrew Roche)

Blackhawks tie franchise-best start with 3-2 win

(AP) ? Jonathan Toews scored the game-winner early in the third period and Corey Crawford had 24 saves to help Chicago match the best start in franchise history with a 3-2 victory Saturday night over the Columbus Blue Jackets, running the Blackhawks' record to 5-0-0.

The only other time the Blackhawks began a season 5-0-0 was 1971-72.

Patrick Kane had two assists for the Blackhawks, who have a 40-23-7 record all-time against the Blue Jackets. Crawford, who won for the fourth time this season, was solid all night but particularly when the Blackhawks were a man down.

Steve Mason held his own with 21 saves for the Blue Jackets, who lost their third in a row. A goal by Derick Brassard was waved off in the second period when the officials ruled Nick Foligno interfered with Crawford. That decision caused a sellout crowd of 18,381 to boo throughout the game.

Mark Letestu gave Columbus a 1-0 lead and Artem Anisimov scored late to make it interesting for the Blue Jackets, who have been outscored 12-3 in their losing skid.

Chicago killed all five penalties and was also 0 for 3 on the power play.

Toews, off of Kane's second assist of the night, scored a big goal to put the Blackhawks up two goals 6:35 into the third after a turnover in the Chicago zone. Letestu's pass was deflected by Marian Hossa with Kane retrieving it. He fired a blind, quick pass to Toews who was all alone behind the defense. Toews faked left, then right, before flipping the puck past Mason for his third of the year and a 3-1 lead.

Anisimov backhanded in Brandon Dubinsky's wraparound attempt with 2:19 left in regulation, but the Blue Jackets could not get the equalizer.

With the score tied after a period, the Blackhawks picked up a goal at the 8:50 mark of the second.

Near the boards at the right corner of the blue line, Niklas Hjalmarsson's hard, low drive into heavy traffic in front of the net was redirected by Bickell.

Columbus thought it had tied it moments later but the goal was disallowed, enflaming a capacity crowd.

On the power play after Jamal Mayers went to the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct, Brassard's slap shot from the point beat Crawford. But referee Dan O'Rourke almost immediately waved off the goal. Replays showed Nick Foligno's right skate was in the crease, although there was no apparent contact between him and Crawford.

Between periods, Foligno said O'Rourke told him that the goal was disallowed because "I had bumped him and didn't give him time to reset."

The crowd booed lustily at every opportunity the rest of the night.

The Blue Jackets, who were shut out in their previous game 4-0 at Colorado on Thursday night, scored first while dominating the first 15 minutes.

While swarming the net, Foligno's shot was stopped by Crawford but the rebound caromed out to Letestu, who had been stymied by Crawford earlier in the sequence. This time Letestu slid the puck between the skates of Bolland and then through Crawford for his first goal of the season.

Outshot 6-0 and 9-2 early, the Blackhawks countered.

Columbus defenseman Fedor Tyutin got caught pinching in on offense and the puck ended up on the stick of Kane in the neutral zone with no Blue Jackets in front of him. The Blue Jackets' Ryan Johansen lost his stick trying to stop Kane's momentum, with Kane crashing into Mason who made the save. But while Mason was sprawled in the crease Bolland pounced on the puck and lifted it high over Mason and into the net for his third this season.

NOTES: Chicago went 6-0-0 against the Blue Jackets last season and is 20-12-4 all-time at Nationwide Arena. ... The Blackhawks improved to 4-0-0 on the road this season. ... The Blue Jackets were without RW Cam Atkinson, who suffered a lower-body injury in camp. He may be out at least a week. ... Hossa has 35 points (17 goals, 18 assists) in 29 career games against Columbus while Kane has 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) and Toews 33 (14 goals, 20 assists) in 31 games against the Blue Jackets.

Samsung announces new waterproof, ruggedized Xcover 2 Android phone

We've still got about a month until Mobile World Congress spills forth an untold number of unseen smartphones, but Samsung's announced something a little early. The Galaxy Xcover 2 is its new ruggedized smartphone, with GPS and GLONASS pitching it directly at the adventurers among us. It's water resistant up to a depth of one meter and can hold its breath for 30 minutes, while a 4-inch WVGA display will beam out Android 4.1. Expect to see the same Motion UI features spotted on other Samsung devices recently, including the ability to overturn and mute incoming calls. It'll be powered by an as-yet unmentioned 1GHz dual-core processor, while a 5-megapixel camera will peer out the back. There's also physical camera button to ensure you don't miss any of your underwater adventures.

Samsung mention that the Xcover 2 will also pack a Cardio trainer Pro workout app, although there doesn't appear to be any hardware additions to augment the fitness program -- aside from a strap holder. No word yet on where the phone is expected to land, nor how much the jungle-ready slab might set you back, but we'll be sure to drop it on the ground in Barcelona in a few weeks time.

Pfizer Prevnar vaccine wins approval for ages 6-17

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc on Friday said U.S. regulators had approved wider use of its Prevnar 13 vaccine to prevent infections with pneumococcal bacteria, for children and adolescents aged 6 years to 17 years.

The product was already approved in the United States to prevent infections among children aged 6 weeks through 5 years. It is also approved for adults aged 50 and older.

The vaccine protects against infection with 13 strains of the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium. The bacterium can cause pneumonia, ear infections and other problems.

Prevnar 13 has annual sales of about $3.5 billion, making it Pfizer's third-biggest brand. It was approved in 2010, and has largely displaced an older vaccine called Prevnar, which protected against only 7 prevalent strains of the bacterium.

PICTURE Ashforth goes nuts for Prostate Cancer - Horse Racing ...

It was something of an oddity, even for central London, but dressed in a boiler-suit and heavy boots while wielding a sledgehammer to smash walnuts, the Racing Post's David Ashforth was happy to make a spectacle of himself for a good cause on Friday.

Bypassers may have been a little bemused at the sight of Ashforth going about his business while standing in a shop window for an hour near Holborn tube, but his efforts raised ?380 for Prostate Cancer UK's Sledgehammer Fund.

The event was streamed live on the charity's website as Ashforth attacked a nut - the size of of a man's prostate - every time someone donated ?5.

He said:?"It gave myself and people from the charity the chance to get the message across about prostate cancer and the work they're doing. There's still a lot of ignorance about the disease, and the charity is doing a great job in raising the profile of prostate cancer and money to support both research and people who have the disease."

You can support the cause at prostatecanceruk.org.
