'But wait, there's more': Ginsu knife pitch co-creator dies

(AP Photo)When Ed Valenti went to meet Barry Becher for the first time, he drove to the meeting in his 1972 orange Datsun 240Z. When he arrived at his destination, he parked his car next to another 1972 Datsun 240Z, also in orange.

"And I got out of the car and I said, 'Well, this guy obviously has class,'" Valenti recalled.

That other car was Becher's. From then on, the two became fast friends and business partners, and developed an enormously successful marketing business that changed the way products were sold on television.

Even though they went on to sell numerous products, their most identifiable pitch is probably the infomercial for the Ginsu knife, featuring the iconic, unforgettable phrase, "But wait, there's more."

Becher had been suffering from kidney cancer and died June 22 at a Florida hospital of complications from surgery. He was 71.

In an interview Thursday with ABCNews.com, Valenti reflected on the legacy he and Becher had created.

"We wanted to sell products and we were having a great time. We didn't realize at that time we were changing history," he said.

Becher had owned AAMCO transmission franchises in Rhode Island, and Valenti was an account executive for an NBC station in that area.

Their first infomercial - for the Miracle Painter - delivered far beyond their expectations, especially because the big advertising firms on Madison Avenue had all passed on the pair's concept. So they produced it themselves.

"And we put a man painting the ceiling in a tuxedo. Can you think of a better way to explain no-drip?" Valenti asked.

They sold 1 million Miracle Painters at $10 each.

In the course of a decade, the men said they amassed more than $500 million in sales. Another product - Armourcote - was their most profitable, but Ginsu remains the most widely known.

Millions were sold from the commercial's debut in 1978 into the early 1980s, with audiences mesmerized by images of an exotic-sounding knife that seemed able to cut through anything. The infomercial promised a 50-year guarantee and "much, much more."

Sam Craig, a marketing professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, said Ginsu stands apart from most other infomercial products because it was popular for so long and it had common sales methods that are used to this day.

"They're taking these things that were done at state fairs and carnivals where it could be demonstrated to a group of maybe 10, now you could demonstrate the same thing to a million people or more at the same time," Craig said. "And it takes something that's relatively mundane and makes it appear dramatic."

The impact of their sales style on popular culture has been significant. The Ginsu knife commercial has been spoofed on "Saturday Night Live" and comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld and Gallagher, have all had fun with the concept.

"Every joke-teller [is] using, 'But wait , there's more,' 'How much would you pay?' and all the literary classics that we wrote," Valenti said.

"It takes something like this, a tragedy, to make me realize we did as a team accomplish something and made a contribution and really changed the face of direct marketing," he said. "Did we start out knowing that? No. Was there a lot of forethought, that we woke up in the morning and said, 'We're going to change the way people buy things on TV?' We just didn't know. We had an idea. We tried it, it worked ? "

Becher was a special kind of businessman, Valenti said.

"He was a guy that truly put himself in other people's shoes, and because of that he was able to be very empathetic, very entrepreneurial and very businesslike, all in the same breath, and that's rare," he said.

Becher and Valenti eventually shifted their business to become mainly a media buying firm, PriMedia, but their legacy was sealed. They helped popularize the use of credit cards and 800-numbers for over-the-TV sales and their work is seen as a precursor to extended 30-minute infomercials and round-the-clock shopping channels, including Home Shopping Network.

Becher retired in 2005, the same year he and Valenti published their book, "The Wisdom of Ginsu."

Click HERE to read an excerpt from "The Wisdom of Ginsu."

Becher was the godfather to Valenti's daughter, Erin. Although he was Jewish, Valenti, who is Catholic, received special dispensation from the church so Becher could baptize his daughter.

He last talked to Becher a few months ago.

"I'm deeply saddened by the fact that I didn't have a chance to say goodbye to my friend and to tell him how much everyone loved him," Valenti said.

Becher's funeral was Monday. His family is considering etching on his tombstone, "But wait, there's more."

Ephron blazed trail in male-dominated industry

Oscar-nominated filmmaker and author Nora Ephron is very ill, according to a representative for her publisher. Nicholas Latimer of Alfred A. Smith told The Associated Press that she had spoken to Ephron's son Tuesday morning and was told that Ephron was dying. (AP) ? Before Nancy Meyers, before Sofia Coppola, before Julie Delpy and Kasi Lemmons and Nicole Holofcener, there was Nora Ephron.

She was a rare woman writing and directing in what was (and still is) the male-dominated industry of filmmaking. Ephron staked out her spot on the cinematic landscape with a distinctive voice and formidable wit. Now, she leaves behind a legacy of classic moments and quotable lines after succumbing to leukemia Tuesday at age 71.

The very mention of her name calls to mind a certain kind of movie, something you can't say about many filmmakers, regardless of their gender. They were romantic comedies, yes, but ones for smart women, about smart women, with characters who had both bite and vulnerability to them. Maybe they were a tad too hyper-analytical or neurotic, but they were always highly verbal and, more often than not, destined for the kind of happy ending they deserved.

Meg Ryan forged and reinforced her status as America's Sweetheart with roles in movies Ephron either wrote or wrote and directed: The best of these was 1989's "When Harry Met Sally ..." (directed by Rob Reiner), followed by "Sleepless in Seattle" in 1993 and "You've Got Mail" in 1998, both with Tom Hanks in winning form as Ryan's likable everyman co-star.

Decades later, you can still say the line, "I'll have what she's having," and everyone will instantly know what you're talking about. That's how lasting Ephron's work has been and will remain.

Back in the late '80s and early '90s, Kathryn Bigelow was a rare fellow female filmmaker ? and since has gone on to become the only woman to win an Academy Award for best director, for "The Hurt Locker" ? but she's focused on action pictures. Barbra Streisand also tried her hand at directing around this time with "Yentl," ''The Prince of Tides" and "The Mirror Has Two Faces." But Ephron continued on and endured, for better and for worse.

If we're being honest, some of her later work didn't come close to the level of her best-known and best-loved films. "Hanging Up" from 2000, which she and sister Delia co-wrote and star Diane Keaton directed, felt shrill and slapsticky. "Bewitched" (2005), a big-screen version of the 1960s sitcom which she directed, wrote and produced, seemed like a gimmicky strain.

But her final film, 2009's "Julie & Julia," ended her career on a stronger note. Ephron directed Meryl Streep to one of her 17 Academy Award nominations for her joyous, pitch-perfect portrayal of pioneering chef Julia Child. And it was Streep who would play a version of Ephron herself in one of the earliest films she wrote, 1986's "Heartburn," based on her own scathing novel inspired by her marriage to Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein.

Ephron was a three-time Oscar nominee for the screenplays she wrote or co-wrote for "When Harry Met Sally ..." and "Sleepless in Seattle" as well as for her first produced script, for 1983's "Silkwood," directed by friend and frequent collaborator Mike Nichols and again starring Streep in the real-life nuclear drama.

Looking back on the A-list names listed in this piece, it's a real testament to her talent that high-quality actors and filmmakers were drawn to her and wanted to be associated with her again and again. And we haven't even mentioned Billy Crystal, Carrie Fisher, Jack Nicholson, John Travolta, Steve Martin, the list goes on.

It's that kind of singularity of voice and vision that sets an example for filmmakers to come ? both male and female.

The Sisterhood of Scrapbooking | Inspired Woman Magazine

Editor?s Note ? I was invited to the Scrap Attics-N-More gathering Saturday, April 21st. It was their last get together of the season and the women were busy with scrap books, cards, albums and more. What follows are some of my thoughts, comments made by the women as I wandered around the room and an interview with Angela Plante, the instigator of it all.

I am not a scrapbooker. I used to glue stuff into big scrapbooks just like my mom did, but now everything gets thrown into a box. Today scrapbookers have Cricuts (pronounced crickets), Cricut minis and Gypsies. They have E-Z runner tape dispensers and machines that can turn anything into a sticker, provided it fits through the slot.

?I have seven scrapbooks I am working on right now. I have seven nieces and nephews and each of them will get a scrapbook when they graduate.?

The number of supplies and accessories at each person?s space was overwhelming. Someone demonstrated a sticker maker. (photo of two sticker makers) Then, I got to see a Cricut in action. Fascinating.

?You don?t scrapbook? You will by the time you leave here!?

Sister-in-laws, mothers and daughters, and friends were spending time together. Some of the women met while scrapbooking. They even go on scrapbooking retreats!

?Usually we leave on Thursday, come home on Sunday. We scrap, eat and sleep for three days.?

?I started out doing a book for each child (she has two) and it was too much, so now I just do one family album.?

Some of the women are consultants for scrapbook supply companies like Creative Memories or Stampin? Up. These companies provide a variety of supplies, like coordinating packs with paper and stickers that match. Those who don?t feel very creative appreciate these sources, and it helps beginners as well.

It seemed to be a badge of honor to be months behind?

?My daughter was eight months old on Monday. and I am just scrapping her first days.?
?You never get caught up because you always take more pictures.?
?If someone gets caught up, we kick them out!?

Scrapbooking can be more than just a hobby. Some people make money putting scrapbooks together for others, and some sell the cards they make. Others make cards as gifts to give to co-workers, friends and family, while others may donate them to organizations to sell. (photo of tshirts on cards ? donating to a church for a rummage sale they are having)

?There are 33 employees where I work, so I put together five or six cards in a pack for Christmas gifts for each of them.?

Project Life
Project Life is a photo album kit that comes with everything you need to document every day for a whole year. (or however long it takes you to finish it!) It comes with a binder, color coordinating cards and stickers. ?Becky Higgins, one of the leaders in our industry, created Project Life,? said Angela Plante, Scrap Attics-n-More coordinator. ?There are now twenty in our group that do it, so I wrote Becky Higgins to tell her what we were doing and she donated one to our group.?

?It really makes you stop and be in the moment. My son and my husband have gotten involved, too. They ask me what Project Life is today, or make a suggestion.?

Plante has been scrapbooking for fifteen years. Her children now scrapbook with her. ?My daughter is right there beside me,? she said. ?She has her own stickers and markers. We have a lot of mothers and daughters that come in.?

She started Scrap Attics-n-More three years ago. ?I was looking for a place to scrap after Scrap Haven closed,? Plante explained. ?I asked the owner of DJ?s (in Lincoln) if I could use her back room. I started by myself and now there are over 100 ladies (in the group) that come and stamp, scrap, crochet and make quilts. About 40 show up each month.?

The group has moved to a church and meets on the third Saturday of every month ? October, November and January through April. They kick off ?scrap season? with a retreat in Medora each fall. Plante sets up and tears down all of the chairs, tables and dishes and to make sure the women have a comfortable place to create each month. She has a theme for every Saturday; deer widow weekend, ugly sweaters, the 80?s and more. There is no charge to attend, Plante stressed, ?it is not a business.?

The women really look forward to these Saturdays. It may be especially beneficial for someone who is new to scrapping or even the community. Some may feel overwhelmed or hesitant when they are considering starting. They may feel they aren?t creative or it is too expensive. Attending Scrap Attics-n-More will help new scrappers get ideas and see the many options available to them.

?There is no right or wrong, it?s however you want to do it. That?s what I like about it. Everybody has their own style.?

Plante said there have never been any males join the group, but husbands are usually very supportive of their wives scrapbooking hobby. ?They are the ones building the organizers, shelves, or the rooms, because most women have a space in their homes set aside for scrapping,? she said. ?Some husbands have stood in line to get Cricuts on Black Friday.?

Plante emphasized the importance of preserving memories. ?Everything we create is our legacy to our family members,? she said. ?They may not understand it now, but someday they will appreciate all of the time and love we put into our projects.?

?Scrap Attics n More is more then just a scrapping thing ? it?s an inspirational way of life.? ~Angela Plante

Before buying Nexium learn your heartburn type | News and Society

Heartburn is certainly not the worst health problem you can experience, but it?s a disturbing one for sure. Patients experiencing this problem are seriously distracted by it, especially if the symptoms are severe. Fortunately, there are medications such as Nexium that can soothe the discomfort and provide the necessary relief when required. However, it?s very important to know what the most likely causes of heartburn are and what can be done about it in different situation. That?s why we?ll overview the basic types of heartburn:

Seasonal heartburn

This is usually regarded as the mildest form of heartburn that is common during the summer. With more fruits on the table, common barbecues and more relaxed schedule, heartburn can result from simple overeating and consumption of foods that provoke acid production in the stomach. These include heavy fats, meat, fast food, sweets, chocolate, coffee and others. If you start feeling a mild discomfort in your esophagus, it?s better to reconsider your diet and include milder products into it, such as apples, fish, poultry and others.

Nighttime heartburn

Nighttime heartburn is usually a lifestyle problem, resulting from improper meal schedule. The main cause for heartburn during sleep, which can be the main factor for developing sleep disorders and associated conditions, is the fact that when lying down your stomach is in line with your esophagus and its contents tend to flow out of it, and cause acidic damage to the sensitive inner lining of the esophagus. In order to prevent this, make sure to eat in at least three hours before bedtime and avoid heavy meals in the evening.

Pregnancy heartburn

Heartburn is a rather common symptom during pregnancy that results from the physiological changes the pregnant woman is undergoing. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which connects the stomach with the esophagus and prevents the food from flowing back up, lies within the same plain as the diaphragm and its functions are amplified with the help of this muscle. However, when the fetus starts to develop, it pushes the stomach and the esophagus upwards a bit, to the point when LES is not within the same plane as the diaphragm. This in turn weakens the functions of the sphincter and allows some stomach contents to reflux back into the esophagus, causing heartburn. If this becomes a major discomfort, consult with your doctor about using Nexium.

GERD

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a serious health problem that can lead to chronic heartburn and more serious symptoms. If you experience heartburn on a regular basis at least once a week, it may be the sign of GERD. And the sooner you start treating it the better. Doctors usually Nexium pills as a means to soothe the discomfort, although it is usually a part of the treatment that involves other medications as well.

How to use your Locked-In Retirement ... - Smart Home Choice

How to use your Locked-In Retirement Investment Fund for a Rent to Own Home

Thanks to everyone that came out to today?s viewing for our new home located in Courtice. For anyone that came out and is interested in moving forward with this home, please get in contact with us as soon as possible as this home is going to go quick. For anyone that required additional information, Darlene should be getting that out to you soon if you haven?t received it yet.

She was kind enough to write out the entire process.

Please have a read as I think you will find this a very interesting topic. This process will help a number of families that are interested in getting into Rent to Own but are faced with the issue of not having a large enough down payment.

The basic procedure would be to first contact their financial advisor who manages their LRIF (Locked-In Retirement Investment Fund) to confirm that it is in fact Locked-In money. The next steps are indicated as follows:

  • On the application, complete Page 21 & 22 to include client?s personal info as well as spousal info.

  • Indicate on page 21?what the policy number is of the account you wish to request approval for the withdrawal and on page 22 be sure to include the Financial Company you are investing with. Ie: London Life.

  • Also make?sure to include a print out copy of your Locked-In account showing the policy number and the balance in the plan.

  • Then proceed to page 26 ~ Part D for the application to Withdrawal for First and Last Months Rent and provide details of amount requesting and property requesting for.

  • Lastly, complete page 36 with client and spousal signatures as well as page 37 with spousal consent to withdrawal the funds.

Once this is completed, either the financial advisor or the client can mail the attached application to the address listed on page 2. The client will then receive a confirmation letter in the mail along with a Table 3 to complete listing Assets and Liabilities for both client and spouse. As long as they end up in a negative, meaning liabilities out way their assets?they should be good to go. Just fax back the form to the assigned person and you should know within a few days via mail.

If approved, a formal Consent letter stamped by FSCO will be included with their approval, which is what they provide to their financial advisor to make the request to withdrawal the funds.

Any client should be able to get further assistance from their advisor regarding the above if they need it.

If anyone needs a copy of the forms, please let us know and we will send them over to you. To clarify, we are not experts on this subject so please contact your financial advisor who manages your LRIF.

Thanks again Melissa for this great write up and for sharing this information to us and our readers.

Until next time.. Make The Smart Choice.

Facebook's new 'Find Friends Nearby' feature: Creepy or clever?

11 hrs.

Facebook quietly added a new feature to its mobile?website and apps this weekend. It's called "Find Friends Nearby" and it ... well, it does exactly what you'd think it might.

TechCrunch's Ingrid Lunden was among the first to call attention to the new feature, after a developer tipped her off.

You can access?Find Friends Nearby either through the iOS or Android?Facebook apps ? just open up the main?menu, tap "Apps," select "Find Friends," press "Other Tools," and then pick "Find Friends Nearby"?? or by?heading to http://fb.com/ffn?on your mobile device.

Note that you'll have to authorize either the apps or your browser to access your current location. This doesn't mean that?you're allowing either to reveal your location all the time though. As soon as you leave the Find Friends Nearby page, you'll be off the radar once again. (This makes sense because it prevents people from stalking you?invisibly or from being stalked without actively choosing to announce their location.)

While you are on the Find Friends Nearby page?? it looks the same in the apps and in the browser ? you'll be able to find out who happens to be both near you and staring at that same page.

The feature is incredibly convenient if you happen to be chatting with someone in person and want to add him as a Facebook friend. Rather than tapping out his name and wasting minutes scrolling through a list of similarly named individuals, you can just ask your new pal to open up the Find Friends Nearby page and add him with a quick tap.

Opening up the Find My Friends page, while convenient, also exposes you to potential awkward or creepy moments. There is always a chance that someone you are avoiding or not interested in interacting with ?will happen to have the same page open?? and spot your name. He or she would instantly know that you are nearby and quickly view the public information on your Facebook profile.

So the final verdict? Find Friends Nearby is incredibly convenient, but?? like many similar tools ? not without potential for disaster.?

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Genome-wide analysis shows previously undetected abnormalities in parents of affected children

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? The use of genome-wide array analysis[1] in parents whose children are suspected of having a genetic disease shows that the parents frequently also have previously undetected genetic abnormalities, a researcher from The Netherlands told the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics June 24. Being aware of this is important to parents because it means that their risk of having another affected child is significantly increased.

Dr. Nicole de Leeuw, a clinical laboratory geneticist in the Department of Human Genetics of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in Nijmegen, and colleagues performed genome-wide SNP[2] array analysis in 6,500 patients and 1,874 parents. The patients had intellectual disability and/or congenital abnormalities, and the parents of those in whom an aberration was detected were tested in a similar way to determine whether they had the same aberration as their child. Mosaic aberrations, where both genetically normal and abnormal cells are present in an individual, were not only found in one in every 300 patients, but in one in every 270 parents as well. "These abnormalities occurred more frequently than we had expected," said Dr. de Leeuw. "Armed with this knowledge, we can try to understand not only why, but also how genetic disease arises in individuals, and this can help us to provide better genetic counselling."

Analysis of patients' genomes showed 6.5% de novo (spontaneously arising) genomic imbalances, 9.1% of rare, inherited imbalances, and 0.8% of X-linked abnormalities. Moreover, with the additional data from their SNP array test results, the researchers were able to subsequently find pathogenic mutations in recessive disease genes, uniparental disomies (where a single chromosome is doubled leading to two genetically identical ones), and mosaic aneuploidies (an extra or missing chromosome in some of the cells of the body) in about 30 patients.

"In at least seven families, these findings meant that what we had thought of as a spontaneously arising, non-inherited genetic abnormality in a child was in fact already present in some form in the parent," said Dr. de Leeuw. "Furthermore, when we tested in different cell lines -- for example, DNA from blood and that from a mouth swab -- we often found that results varied. This is because mosaic aberrations can occur in cells in some organs and not in others, and underlines the importance of not just relying on one type of cell line for this kind of genetic diagnosis."

In two cases these tissue-dependent differences changed over time, and the researchers believe that this was due to an attempt by the body to correct and rescue the situation. "Such rescue attempts are best known in cases of trisomy, where there are three chromosomes instead of two in a cell, or monosomy, where there is only one. In both these cases, the body may try to correct the situation by respectively deleting or adding (doubling) a chromosome. Such rescue mechanisms may be more common than we expected, and by using genome-wide SNP array analysis it will help us to reveal them. For some patients, it would be particularly interesting if we could test multiple samples of these patients over time," said Dr. de Leeuw.

The majority of genetic diseases are not treatable, but in some cases a special diet may reduce the severity of the symptoms ,for example, in phenylketonuria (PKU) or in coeliac disease, in others the same can be obtained by periodic examination of certain organs (for example in Down syndrome or Marfan syndrome). Sometimes hormone treatment will be of benefit to the patient, for example growth hormone treatment in Turner syndrome. For most patients with a genetic disorder, there is no cure, but knowing the genetic cause of their disease may help and improve the care for these patients through knowledge about other patients with the same disease. And if the family is at risk of a genetic disease, couples considering having children can be better informed as to their options, the researchers say.

"By using genome-wide array analysis to look for imbalances in the human genome, we will uncover more and more accurate findings in patients. This will not only increase our knowledge of genetic disorders and the human genome in general, but if we can also collect the clinical features of these patients in a structured and uniform way, the information will become increasingly valuable. Fortunately, this is becoming easier due to advances in tools and software applications, and many professionals in the academic and commercial world have agreed to collaborate in order to substantially increase the genotype/phenotype collection and make these anonymised data publicly available to medical professionals in order to improve patient care worldwide," Dr. de Leeuw concluded.

Notes:

[1] A DNA microarray (or gene chip) is a collection of microscopic DNA spots attached to a solid surface, used to measure the relative quantity of large numbers of genes simultaneously in multiple regions of a genome, thereby determining the DNA copy number.

[2] A SNP (pronounced 'snip'), or single nucleotide polymorphism, is a relatively common DNA sequence variation, a change in a single nucleotide -- A, T, C or G -- in the genome, without clinical consequences. Each person has about 3 million SNPs in his or her genome, a unique genetic signature. In a SNP microarray, the probes (small pieces of DNA) bind only to the complementary piece of DNA being analysed if it is an exact match, making it possible to determine the genotype (SNP composition) of a DNA sample in addition to the DNA copy number.

Residents, tourists flee Colo. wildfires

Wildfires moved in on some of Colorado's most popular summer tourist destinations over the weekend, demolishing nearly two dozen homes near Rocky Mountain National Park and emptying hotels and campgrounds at the base of Pikes Peak.

A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles early Sunday, prompting the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists. On Saturday, a blaze destroyed 21 structures near the mountain community of Estes Park, where many visitors stay while visiting the park.

All of this came just a week before the Fourth of July, a key time for family vacations to national parks and other destinations. A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice of Rock Falls, Ill., who evacuated a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday with her husband, four children and dog. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders. Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this god-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

Plumes of gray and white smoke poured from the mountains Sunday, obscuring at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful." Winds were pushing smoke away from Colorado Springs, but residents and tourists watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Half the nation's firefighting fleet is now battling fires in Colorado, said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting on Monday.

With eight wildfires burning, including a fire that has scorched more than 118 square miles and destroyed at least 191 homes near Fort Collins, Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

The wildfire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Carolyn Baty and her husband, Darrell, vacationing from Fort Worth, Texas, were evacuated from their cabin Saturday afternoon.

"I smelled smoke coming from both directions, and then I heard the knock on the door," Darrell Baty told The Denver Post.

A fire burning near Fort Collins has scorched more than 118 square miles, destroying at least 191 homes. Though some evacuees were allowed home Sunday, that blaze has become among the largest and most expensive in Colorado history.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? In Utah, a 12.5-square-mile blaze around Fountain Green in Sanpete County was threatening 200 homes in four rural subdivisions, forcing 800 people to 1,000 people to flee. BLM says the human-caused fire erupted Saturday afternoon and is 4 percent contained. Officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Officials said the fire has blackened at least 1,000 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained, having burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said Sunday that containment against the Pecos Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 50 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.

Red Wine And Black Tea Bioactives Fight Skin Cancer | PaleoPharm

Skin cancer is now the most prevalent form of cancer. It is so pervasive that it is not usually included in the national cancer statistics that list ?high-profile? cancers of the breast, colon, lung, and prostate. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is notoriously chemo-resistant and radio-resistant and there are no known cures for invasive melanoma. Regrettably, the standard-of-care treatments used today provide only meager survival times.

Consider?able evidence from laboratory studies suggests that a combination of nutraceuticals could provide protection against melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. New evidence also suggests that certain nutraceutical combinations can cause melanoma cells to self destruct (apoptosis), at least in laboratory studies.

The precedent for this approach?using two or more natural bioactive compounds to achieve synergistic effects on gene expression in tumor cells?is supported by a number of recent studies:

  • Researchers have shown that a using a combination of two widely available natural compounds, curcumin (the bioactive in the spice, turmeric), and green tea catechins, can prevent chemically induced colon carcinogenesis rat model more effectively than either of the compounds alone.
  • In one study, a combination of genistein and selenium significantly inhibited growth of prostate cancer cells in a dose-and time-dependent manner by decreasing gene expression for matrix metalloproteins-2 levels, which are known to promote tumor cell proliferation, migration, and adhesion.
  • Recently, researchers examined the effects of resveratrol, the well-known red wine polyphenol and black tea theaflavins, two widely consumed food components that have been frequently cited to protect humans from skin carcinogenesis. Study results showed that the synergistic effect of resveratrol and black tea theaflavins leads to enhanced tumor cell death. Both of these compounds are known to repair DNA damage, which probably accounts for the synergistic effect.

Studies suggest that resveratrol and black tea theaflavins can work together to intervene at all stages of cancer stages through different signaling pathways to prevent tumor cell formation, growth, proliferation, and invasiveness. Resveratrol and black tea theaflavins?even at low doses?act together to inhibit established skin tumor growth more than either compound alone. This synergy is most likely? attributable to a reduction in tumor suppressor protein p53 together with an inhibition of MAPK signaling and induction of apoptotic cell death.

No Spin Zone: Preclinical studies suggest that red wine + black tea consumption (or use of bioactive components in these beverages) as well as bioactive compounds in garlic, pomegranate, and turmeric can favorably affect the structure and function of genes and cell signaling components that affect skin cancer formation and may favorably influence the expression of genes that can inhibit melanoma at any stage as well as induce apoptosis in the tumor cells.

Tips for Buying Your First Home | Tucson Real Estate for Sale

Tips for Buying Your First HomeWhen we write about Tucson real estate, we sometimes forget that first time buyers might want a basic overview of the steps to go through when looking to own your first property. These are basic steps most first-time homeowners have to deal with, today we examine them.

Be sure to hire an agent

The most important thing that an agent gives you is peace of mind and free time. Especially if you have to go through all the houses online or attend countless open houses, you are going to realize that it is much easier to have an experienced person do this for you instead.

  • An agent can send you listings that actually fit what you are looking for. This means that you do not waste time searching through homes that you would never be interested in or able to afford.
  • Oftentimes there is a little bit of time between a listing being for sale and actually being published on the market. Agents often know about listings beforehand.
  • An agent can advise you on undesirable locations and overpriced listings. You cannot expect to know everything the first time that you are buying a home. Take advantage of the knowledge of others.

?

Make sure financing is taken care of

While it not necessary, it helps when you have loan preapproval?in advance. That way you know how much you are able to spend and you will not encounter financial problems later on. Again, an agent could help you with information here. Perhaps you would prefer an FHA property because the down payment happens to be much lower. Know your options before you buy.

Negotiate negotiate negotiate

Especially first-time buyers make the mistake of comparing sales prices of a home to different homes. Do not allow Tucson real estate asking prices to determine what to bid. You have to realize that a seller can ask whatever they want, just because they ask for a high amount does not mean that it is going to sell for that price. Be sure to examine the pending sales and look at comparable sales. An agent can easily advise you on prices that you should be comparing your own offer to.

Do not forget about the home inspection

Many states are different; there are states where a home inspection is a?contract contingency. This means that if the buyer sees the state of the home after inspecting it, they have the right to cancel the contract if it is undesirable. For example, you do not want be stuck purchasing a home with a faulty foundation. It is important to remember that while they are not obligated to perform repairs, they often will for the risk of ruining a deal.

Remove a Wall, removing a wall More Details about Remove a Wall, removing a wall here.

Walls are actually needed to build towers, houses and multi storey buildings. They are completed by making floors below and roofs above them. The purpose is to divide and create walkable spaces. By constructing walls of different lengths and sizes, you are actually able to construct different rooms in your houses. What is the need of Removing a Wall? In many situations, there is the need of removing an existing wall in order to redefine the space. For instance, if you want to increase the space of your bedroom by removing the wall of adjoining kids bedroom, you want to extend your bathroom or you want to make a large hall instead of separate dinning and drawing rooms of your home. Taking a Cost Estimate and Carrying the Process It is very important to have a proper market survey and take a rough cost estimate. You can take advice from any related contractor or engineer. Another important point under consideration is that the wall to be removed is either a bearing wall or a partition wall. A bearing wall is the one having roots in the structure whereas a partition wall is a light wall amongst the interiors whose sole purpose is to separate spaces. So, before removing a wall, consult the contractor or architect to make sure it is not a bearing wall which could harm structure of the house, and if it is a bearing wall, then how to deal with it. You can hire a contractor with reasonable rates to serve the purpose. You can save your cost by doing it yourself too but you need to be very careful while doing so. Be very careful in removing electrical outlets from the wall or take help from an electrician in this regard. You will need a hand sledge and a hammer to do it yourself. Don't forget to wear heavy gloves and a dust mask before starting the work. It is quite easy to relocate electrical cabling hidden in the walls like doorbell wires and television cables. There are a lot of more challenges sometimes hidden inside paneling or plaster like steam pipes, heating ducts, central vacuum piping, water supply lines, huge beams, support columns etc. No doubt, there is a solution to relocate any of these challenges but the trickier the task, more energy and cost is involved. Sometimes, it becomes very difficult to deal with bearing wall having support columns and massive beams. Likewise, a plumbing drain line of large size can create serious troubles for a plumber. Some latest technology is highly beneficial in spotting the clues, allowing seeing the top as well as the bottom of the wall in detail which is intended to be removed. It becomes easier to deal with any plumbing line exiting the top wall or any drain line exiting the floor easily beforehand. The toughest to deal with are support columns and hidden beams. We can therefore say that removing a wall is a simple, yet tactful work. You need to have proper information about all the features incorporated.

AT&T strikes a deal with Sirius XM to make 23GHz LTE a reality, pitches it to the FCC

AT&T has been a little more eager than usual to get spectrum after a certain big deal fell through, and we now know that Big Blue has been willing to bury a few outstanding hatchets to make that happen. The carrier has filed with the FCC to propose a deal with Sirius XM that would get its LTE-based 4G running on the 2.3GHz Wireless Communications Service (WCS) that, normally, satellite radio intersects. Rather than stay at an impasse, AT&T has agreed to a 5MHz dead zone on either end of Sirius XM's frequencies that would mitigate the risk of that Internet video stream colliding with Howard Stern. The provider still needs clearance to go ahead, and might not exactly get a resounding thumbs-up from WCS holder NextWave, which stands to lose more than a small piece of its airwave pie. An FCC all-clear would nonetheless raise the chances that AT&T keeps LTE flowing freely as subscribers pile on the network, even after the telecom behemoth conceded spectrum to T-Mobile.
